The following letter of condolence ■was sent by His Worship the Mayor, on bfthulf of the residents of Wairuate, to Mrs Froeinan, on Tuosday :—: —

Waikatb, July 24, 1900. Mrs Freeman. Pear Madam. — It was with daep rB gret I learnt of the death of jour son In South Africa. I remember well how anxious he was to go and accompany Major Cradock, with whom he was associated in civil life, and how anxious Major Cradock was that he should accompany him. It must be a ■deep grief to yourself and family to think that it has ended so sadly. It will, however, be a comforting reflection, not only to yourself, but to all Ms relatives and friends,- that your son's life was given matters littl* whether it was through f«ver or from a bullet) for his Queen and Conutry; and that while ha could shoulder his rifle in active service he bora himself n<{ becomes a " Soldier and a man," t^at high standard beqnsathed to us from tho days of ancient Greeoe and JR'juie, but which still remains as the j griui'l ideal, animating the breasts of «llthelo.\al motnbers of the British nice. You will carry with you in this your bereavement, the kindest and most sympathetic feelings of the people of this town, who fully recognise your loss, made, we know, none the l<ass by ilid fact that it is the widow's sacrifice, j ■On behalf of this community, and myself, UiurafoM.., I beg most respect. Jully to tendor you our heartfelt symjathy. — I am, Dkar Mrs Frebm^n, Yourb Sincerely, H. 0. Barcliy, Mayor.
