The monthly meeting of the above n&s h«ld yesr,erday, Messrs Douglas (chairman), Walker, Lyall, Hjrdie, Rhodes and Ross being present. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows :—: — Fiona the New Zealand Counties Association, advising the council of a conference to be held to consider legislation, now before the House, which affected county councils. Messrs Itliodes and Walker spoke on this matter, and both considered tho chairman tho proper person to represent th© council. Mr Douglas was therefore appointed the council's delegate on the conference. From Lands Department, stating that tho request for an additional £250 for Skevingfcon's Road would be con- j sidered in due course. — Received. From same, re fcho request of this I council for Mr Broderick to examine th» dam objected to at Whitneys Creek. It was the work of the council to rtmove tho dam. Fro 121 Souuh Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, informing the council that they had decided to ask the various local bodies of South Canterbury to contribute to tho coat of a Plague Hospital. The council's levy would be £'ti'd 0s Bd, and they would ask that this sum be granted at ones. Mr Walker described the reasons for not constructing the hospital out of ths Board's funds. They Gould nob legally do so, and the present means of levying from the local boditja was the only way possible: The proposed hospital would 'hold eight patients. Ms Hardie- thought that the money should be passed subject to bwing returned if not required. White, the solicitor for Mr Smith, Otaio, r^ the road asksd to be raised by Mr Copeland. Smith, Morven, drawing council's attention to the bad stats o* the road, leading past Faulkner's, aoross the river and pass Growe'd. Applicant was a Waihao ratepayer, and tha road was mostly hi Deep Creek Riding. Mr Walker hold that ibis was another proof of the hardships suffered by Deep Creek. j Mr Douglas thought it was aback road, and one that need not be used if anyone cared to go another way. — Overseer to report. Cochr&ne, Chairman of Committee, reporting that Messrs Morris, Barnott, Hanlej* Eyan and Fahoy bad bien appoiuted as members' of the Lower Waiaao Water-x*ce Committee, subject to the approval of the council. It had been decided to pay the new committee foy their services. A.. W.-Barnett reported having been appointed chairman for the ensuing year. The committee would like a legal opinion on the question of charging those using water and not paying rates. The committee recommended that members receiv* 10a per month, the chairman to receive 12s. They suggested that the committee should be increased to seven.

For No. 35Qj no tender was received, and' for No 857 and 358, the tenders were too high, and fresh tenders are to be called for all; ihr«e. Accounts amounting to «6699 18s •were passed, and the meeting adjourned till 2 p.m. The overseer's report was read, .and we will publish it in full next issue. Mr Bremner, in^ reporting on Whitneys Creek overflow, declared -that it seeemed that the popular opinion was that the dam so much heard of, did not caus» the flow on the road, but that the weeds in the j «reek were the cause. Mr Hardie brought up the ques&oa of travelling huts and cooking camps on the road. This is a very objectionable practice, and was condemned by the council. Tha overseer was appointed to serve nofiioes on those allowing gone to grow on the roads.
