SPORTSMEN AND THEIR SPORT.
Wanton destruction of property by so called sportsmen is becoming a j matter of yearly consideration to tha former, but according to the evidence of some farmers of the Ellesmere district not only wanton destruction of property, but cruel and needless injury to animal lifo has been occasioned lately in this district. One farmer" bought a fine young hsifer from another the other day for beef. Oa killing her it was found that sotneo;)'* had evidently fired at her. as some CO pellets of shot were extracted from heir flauk. This fact speaks for itself, Another faGt that has been given us H that a young man owning a horse, neat the Selwjn, discovered that a slug shot, such as ia used for shooting swans, had been embedded in its jaw. Tn& wound was a nasty and dangerous one, and the horse" for some time was in a ethical state. It must, indeed, be j, cruel sportsman who finds sport m t hooting use/al and inoffensive aiiiioal s inflicting needless torture on them foi? " fun." — EUasmere Guardian.
