Demonstration Committee.
A unaafcmg of the Damonstration •Comraittee was held laßt evening, there 'being present : — His Worship tae JJvyor (in the chaiv), and Messrs Akhurst '(secretary), Middleton, Frank ,]in, Mathias. A. Philip, Hamilton, ililsom, Pitcaithly, and Revs. MoKeii- j zie Gibbon aud G. An apology was read from Mr Douglas. Telegrams we're read from the Acting Pieinier, stating that the declaration d paace, beiog of suck importance to the Empire, the Government thought thftb a holiday for the whole colony on the same day would be desirable, and one would be fixed by the Government a few days after .the declaration of peaco. Suggestions wore then made for celebiations on the holiday when it .081118. His Worship thought that the suggestion for comic spoils for the ftftprnoon was a very good one. and on the occasion of the cessation of fighting, involving bloodshed and lite and death, some short thanksgiving service would bo appropriate^. Mr Middlenon suggested that thare abould be a public •thanksgiving before 12 o'clock. A procession should then ba formed to inarch to the park, where children 'b sports could be held. A platform could be erected in the park, and patriotic speeches delivered. The Uu bakeis might be asked to open booths on the giound, with a low charge for refreshments. A small chiige could ba made for admission to the park, and the surplus over expenses be given to the Indian Famine Belief Tund. Mr Akhurst suggested a short thanksgivng suinoe &$ H o'clock. At I o'e_oc!r a prrjeession to the park, ■wliijrj ccmic and children's sports would be held. At 6 o'clook a torchlight procession of the whole population to some public pkee w'aere iir^woite and bonfire would be held. A short pitmotie conoert, about 8 o'clock, would fittingly bring the day's proceedings tQ a close. Most of the members expressed the opinion that a, thanksgiving service was most fitting on such an occasion. The Bgv. GK BarcUy moved, and Mr Pitcaithly seconded, that the ministers of tho town be asked to arrange a short thanksgiving sexvice, commencing at II a..m. Hamilton moved as an amendment, and Mr Mithias seconded, that th.9 matter of a thanksgiving be left to ihe option of the ministers, and io bo fiom the committee's progrnuune. On being put, the amendcient was lost. Tne Roy;. McKanzie Gibson and G. Bbi3]fty wf^re appointed to arrange with the other mmhteis about the Berrice. at the morning service, a.i-1 p polled en taken up by young ladiss. in ihe Pak, a to be devoted to the Indian Fara'.io Fund. The townspeople are to be asked to illuminate their premises. Messrs Mathias, Pitcaithly, C. Dish, A. Manchester, C. Goldstone, and W. J. Wills were asked to arrange the sports. Messrs Philip, Milsorn, Sinclaii, and Walker, with the Fire Brigade, weie appointed a bonfire and fireworks committee. Messrs Hamilton, Coltman, and Pitcaithly were appointed a concert committee. The meeting then adjourned till Tues day evening nbxt at 8.30 p.m.
