The Rival Cables.

Sydney, Feb. 14. The Premier thinks that the objections to the Cape cable are quite unreasonable. The Pacific cable would not in any way be jeopardised. The offer of the Eastsrn Extension Company relieves the Government of a heavy sabiidy and materially reduces the tariff. Certainly, if tha Pacific route cannot justify its own existence, it is not a great argument for laying the cable.

Melbourne, Feb. 14. The general manager of the Eastern Extension Company informed the Posimaster-General that his board has agreed to the modifications of the Cape Cable Scheme recommended by the Premiers' i Conference, including and subjectto certain slight' amendments. Formal notice of not less than six months' is to be given to enable the company to open its own offices simultaneously with the completion of 'the cable. The cjuesfcion of lift-

ing the Roebuck Bay cable is to bo left to the Westralian Government and the company to sattle after the completion of the Cape cable. The manager states that reduced ratea will oome into operation within three weeks after the signing of the contract. Mr Crick, in a speech, said that; if the Pacific cable could not stand fair competition he did not see why -it should not go . to the wall, and that a Government Cable, supported by Canada, England, and Australia^ having Government business as a monopoly, could not compete against a private firm, was against common sense.
