THE THIRD CONTINGENT.
Auckland, Feb. 9. Twenty men and horses wont into camp to cLiy at Potter's Paddock. They were inscructed in drill by Adjutant - Major and Lieutenant Walker. More men arrived this afternoon, and niore will arrive to morrow. The riding tests arc to be made tomoirow by Colouel Banks and Captain Hoidgate. Captain Abbott, who passed tho medical examination is expected to take command of 'the Auckland Contingent.
Napier, Feb. 8. A great patriotic demsnstration took place at the B cough Company's performance last evening, when the Hawke's Bay section of the Thiid Contingent were present as the guests of the Company.
Feb. 10. ! There will soon be enough money to equip another fifyy men. CHRibTCHur-CH, Feb. 9. The Christchurch send-off Committee waited on the Minister of Haihvajs to day and asked for a r.ebate for the Canterbury War Fund for the faros of passengers visiting Ghiisbchurch on demonstration city. Mr Weird pointed out that oxcursion fares ac Id and 2d per mile, weie gazetted for the whole colony, and the only way the request could be complied with would be to add a concession to the glutted fares, and this would mean the people would have to pay it. Pie could not do that even if he had power, even for Canterbury or any other part of the colony. The Lyttelton Committee beg to bo granted a concession of 2d, which was on a similar footing to regatta time. That amount was in addition to the 1 gazetted fares. Volunteers will 'be carried free over all lines, but request must be made for that privilege by the Defence Department.
Feb. 10. The contingent camp continues io be characterised by the best of discipline, and 88 men have so far been sworn in. It Is expected that the final selection of the Canterbury troop will be fixed up to-night. There m
approved troop horses in camp at present, and more are shortly expected, j Two thousand people were present at the mounted parade at Hagley Park ou Satuiday, and tho work was smoothly done. Eighty-five men attended Pollard's performance at the Theatre Royal on Saturday night and were greatly pleased. Ten men and 1:5 horses belonging to the Napier men have arrived. The Sunday dinner was, a gieat success, and hearty cheers were given for the prouders of the many Inxmies, The Rev. \V. S. Be.iv, Chaplain of the Engineers, conducted duiue service at the camp, and pteachod aa impressive patriotic •aoiiuon. Soldo 5000 people visited the camp dining the afternoon, and a mounted pai.ide oi some 50 men was held in order that the public might see the horses and gear. The greatest public inteies>t is. being taken in the progress the men are making.
Wellington, Feb. 9. The Agent General cables that General Lyttelton seiz-d Kiantz Hill, past of Spion Kop on Monday, and repulsing a Bosv attempt to e^ect him was still there on Tuesday morning — the last news. The Patriotic Fair at Mastercon produced over .-C9OO, despite the rough weather in the early part of the day.

I The More Men Fund has now reached over £2700 besides .£lOOO collected at Masterfcon. flu AgiuiL-Geneial telegraphs :—: — London 10. — Krantz Hill, which was captured by General JBuller, is thirteen miles southwest of Ladysunth. The Goveinoi returns to Wellington on Tuesday. Ho visits Chustchurch for the dcpaituro of the contingent. The Pioimer also leaves Christchuich on Thursday to be piesenfc when the men go away. The Vv'anganui and New riymonth contingent, numbeiing seventy odd men. arrived bj' special train on Saturday night.
Dcnedin, Feb. 9. Owing to tho number of men offering, the Pro nier definitely consents to accept 150 men from Ot,\< 6 o and Southland, but insists that this number shall not bo increased. For the Otago nnd Southland section of the Fonith Contingent 090 names of \olnntoers nro enrolled. The first batch of about 20 passed tho medical inspection to-day. Tho committee bayo.riQW offers of over 300 horses and lull equipment for men, and as the men with equipment have the first choice, if &mtablo, the chances of those unablo to supply horse and equipment aie very small. The men go into camp on Monday. The Patriotic Fund has now reached close on ,£BOOO in tho general treasurer's hands. The " Daily Times " Patriotic Fund is £i)QQ and the same paper's liemount Fund £250. An employee of tho " Daily Times,' having volunteered, hi" fellow employees are subscribing £2b for a horse for him.
