HOOK. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Harvest work has commenced at the Hook, but will not be general for a week or so. If the weather does not change very soon it will probably be more than a week before it is in full swing. Kain falls about every alternate day, and the temperature on six days out of the seven is more like that of early spring than summer. Farmers, whose grain is in stook, are anxious about the safety of it ; those whose gra : n is ready to cut are wondering when they will be able to cut it~ and those whose crops are still green are beginning to think that harvest will extend into winter. Farmers Certainly possess a reputation for grumbling, and perhaps deservedly so, but it must bo admitted that there is ample excuse for it. The turnip crops in this district are looking remarkably well. This is due, no doubt, to the wet season, but as they are now well forward, we would like to see less rain, and more sunshine. The Hook Patriotic Fund has now nearly reached the respectable total of £20. When it is remembered that ve.Ty many of the residents in this district have subscribed, and are still subscribing, liberally, to the Waimate and Makikihi funds, it will be recognised that the Hook has resolved not to be behindhand in practical loyalty.-
