Jan. 30. A hard north-easter blew yesterday, when the .Rainbow hotly pressed White Wings throughout. l'he second race will be held 10-aay. The wind is southerly and fresh. The breeze was moderate and was falling lighter as the afternoon wore on. "White Wings hung on m fine style during the first round, but the Aucklander showed superiority in light weather, and won with 7rain. 50secs. to spare. Mr Barton has been appointed to represent New South Wales on the federal Delegation in England. It is believed that no amendment to the Bill will be agreed to by the delegates. It is understood that Lord Beauchamp retires when ths GovernorGeneral is appointed.

Melbourne, Jan. 29. The worst bush fires for fiftyyears havo devastated the Waruambool district. The whole country between" Dunkeld and Morlake is black°ned nuns. A million acres of grass and six woolsheds were destroyed. Twenty thousand sheep and hundreds oi cattle perished. The damage is estimated at a hundred thousand pounds. The inhabitants fought the flames heroically. Rain ultimately stopped the fire. There were many narrow escapes. One man is missing.
Jan. 30. Later accounts estimate the damage by bush fires at £200,000. Thuksd/Vy Island, Jau. 26. It is expected that the Airlie will be floated off on Wednesday.
