Waimate County Council.

The monthly meeting of the above was held yesfeiday ; present, Messrs J. F. Douglas (chan), Milne, Rhodes, Studholme, Walker, Haidie, Lyall and Ross. | The minutes of the previous meeting weie read and confirmed. The cleik reporttd that a meeting had been held on January 9th to open tenders for cocksfoot cutting. Two lenders were xeceived. bill both weie considered too low and the matter was left over. The Council confirmed the oommittee's action. Before commencing the business of the day the chairman moved a vote of condolence with the inmih oi the late Mr Henderson. Mr Henderson ( had been a very valuable member. His death was rendered more deplorable by tne painful manner in which it occuucd. Mr Havclie endorsed the ehah man's rematks. Messrs Milne, Walker and Ross also spoke of the deceased membei's intention to duty and the loss las de^th had be< j n to the Couucil and district in which he lived. The motion was carried unanimously. The clerk reported the election of Mr David Ro-s iv the place of Mr Henderson. The chairman welcomed Mr Ro-ss to the Council, who responded and took his seat. The chaii man brought up a few matttis. First, the bridges of the couuty were being covered with scriptiual injunctions, and he thought it was hatdly the proper thing to deface bridges in this manner. Mr Walker bald if bills had been, pasted up they would have to be, re% moved and this defacement should be obhterHted. Mr Rhodes said it was an offence against the Police Act aoi against the Council. Mr Havdie said it appeared to him little less than blasphemy. At the time it was being done, they could ha\f> taken action, but the pamtir had gone the whole length oi New Zealand and could haidly be dealt with now. It was deeidtd that the mseiipnons be obliterated, and that the matter be placed in the hands ot the police, no punibhrnent. to be sought, but merely a warning. Re the tenders. It was not thought the price offeied was sufficient to piolubit the ratepayers from cutting cocksfoot. Mr Walker said the present method was very unsatisfactory. If tlia council issued licenses for certain dis. tanees it would prevent a waste cf valuable seed, aud keep a number of men employed. Mr Huidie said if they granted a license to people the Council would be liable for damage. As it was they weie clear of responsibility, and they had better leave it alone. It was decided that the council make no resUictions. Tlip chairman said a great number of tenders had been called last month and there was not much competition. Contractors now had plenty work, and talking it over with the overseer they decided to call none for this mouth, but ailow the rush ot harvest to be gob over Mr Hardie said there were two small woiks in Makikitu that would need attention soon. Mr Rhodes endorsed the chairman's action in the matter, expressing the opinion that th« council should not pay exorbitant prices tor woik done. The chairman said he had been asked to call a meeting co assist the Patriotic Fund. He bud not done so, but had joined ,with the Borough Council in taking action. Mr Walker paid the reason the County Council had been asked to hold a meeting of its own was that the iiorough had seemed somewhat lax. However, they had '"got off the inaik " in earnebt when they did start. The chairman's action was endorsed. The chaiiman s*ud the road through Mr Studholme's had been ovei looked by the committee. It was imperative that something should ba done at once. Mr Baxter bad made an effer iv regaid to the woik. There was no use going on with the road through Skevington's unless they did that through StudnolrWs, as the one joined the other. After discussion, Mr Walker urged immediate action, as, if not started before the end of March, the Govern, ment grant lapsed. It was decided that a sub committee of the Council arrange with Mr Studholme, and Mr , Studholme arrange \wth the Gtlaerjaterested. parties.
