School Committee.
A meeting of the above was heXd on Tuesday, present — Messrs Hamilton (clmii), Cameron, Nicol, Watts, MathidS and iicotfc (secretary). Apologies were received from Batcher and Taylor. The minutes of last 'meeting were read and confirmed.
The headmaster reporter! that at the opening of the school the attendance was only 87(5, but it had unproved till now it was 417. Mr B. Goldstone having left' to go to South Afri™. a vacancy had occurred. Mr John Stewart had been taken on to fill : the vacancy, and he recommended the committee to confirm the appointment. He applied for ei<?ht new desks and renewed his •application fur a complete chemical apparatus. The three (.•andicJa-ies who pat for matriculation were successful. He expressed great satisfaction with he way the school was cleaned mcl said great praise was due to ' he janitor. A letter was received from Mi- • 0. J. Goldstone asking that his ! brother. Kobert Goldstone, be granted leave of absence till his eturn with the second coningent, and that his position as inpil teacher be kept open foi lim. After considerable discussion, it was moved by Mr Hamilton, -oconded by Mr Watt?, and it was carried, "That while (he Committee regret tlie discoui;cous manner in which Mr Goldstone left, neither apphiug for ieave of absence nor intimating bis intentions to the chaiiman, ihey will, un<ler the special circumstances, grant him temporal y I leave of absence." ' On the motion of Messrs Mathias and Scott, Mr John '■ Stewait w>s Temporal ily appointed to till the position. Id was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mr Taj lor. On tho motion of Mcss-rs Scott' and Cameion, 'he chairman was isked to s^e the Rev. M. Gibson, and request him to become a candidate for the vacancy on the !<dn cation Board. The visitors leported everything satisfactory. It was decided to give Mr Fagan £1 10s for extra woik entailed in connection with the repairs to the school.
