A LESSON FOE LITTLE ENGLANDERS

At Lambeth Police Court on Wednesday, says a Lontlon paper of Novemer sth, David Coleman, 27, a labourer, was charged before Mr Horace Smith, on his own confession, with being a deserter from the East Surrey regiment. The prisoner walked to the policeconstable Alexander 216 L. while that Officer was on duty outside the Kennington Lane police station, and said he wished to give himself up as a deserter from the East Surrey regiment. A search of the " Gazette " revealed the fact that he deserted in October,, 1890.— Mr Horace Smith proposed to commit the prisoner to Hollaway prison to await a military escort, but the prisoner made an earnest appeal to hia Worship to allow him to be sent direct to the depot of the regiment at Kingston and ssid he would be ready to pay his own fare to that place.— The Chief Clerk (Mr Temple Martin) remarked that that would be a rather unusual course.— Mr W. H. Armstrong solicitor, present in connection with another case, mentioned that on Monday a similar request was made by a deserter and was acceded to by Mr Hepkins, the then sitting Magistrate. No doubt the prisoner was anxous to go out to fight the Boers, and the country would be glad of his services. — Upon learning from Inspector Pike that the police would be I prepared to take the piisoner ; direct to "Kingston. Mr Horace Smith directed that that should be done. The prisoner seemed highly delighted and exclaimed, "Thank you, sir, God bless you," John Cook, who deserted a year ago from the 2nd Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, was remanded on Wednesday at Stockton-on-Tees to await an escort- Ho had voluntarily given himself up stating that h* wished to go to the front with his regiment, which had sailed for the Cape.
