Temuka township has been gazetted a borough. The 15th inst. was tke 128 th anniversary of the birth of 1 Sir Walter Scott.

The Mahanga Bay Explosion. — The Government is cosidenng whether, in view of the very full evidence taken at the inquest, there is any necessity for a departmental inquiry into the Mahanga Bay explosion.

Mr Reakes, Government veterinary surgeon,' will be in Waimate shoitly, and will test any cattle required. Application for this -testing must be sent to the Stock Inspector, Timaru.

Wedding. — A well-known and highly respected citizen of Waimate, Mr G. 11. Graham, was married in Dunedin to Miss Louisa Bitchener, the daughter of Mr A Bitchener, also of this town, on Monday last. Mr Geo Brown acted as best man and Miss Jane Welsh, cousin of the bride, as bridesmaid. The bivde was^ given away by her father. This. ' hippy couple are spending tha honeymoon in the South.

Lecture — On Fiidny evening a laige audience assembled in the Temperance Hall, to hear Mrs HarrisonLeo, of Victoiin, deliver a no license address. The Temperance Choir rendered several melodies while the audience vfreie gatheimg, and at intervals during the evening. Mr T. Brown occupied the chair. After devotional exercises by the Revs. Mormon and Nixon, Mrs Lee spoke for over an hour on vai ions phases of the liquor question. The address v» as lightened by many humorous sallies, the audience being at times convulsed with laughter, and was buttressed with statistics which were closely followed. A full report will appear in our next issue. After the lecturer had answered one or two questions, the Rev. J. Nixon moved and Mr Geo Manchester seconded a hearty vote of thanks which was, after a few words of support by the Rev. Mr Monison, earned by acclamation. The 1 annual, meeting of the Cricket Club will be held on Friday next. Many lovers of the game are- sure to turn up.
