Football. (By Scrum.)
Waimate sent two teams to Oatwaru last Thuibday, aud the first fifteen were beaten by 27 to ml, while the ! second played a draw. The Oamaru men showed that they know far more about football in North Olago than they do in South Canterbury, and although there was not such a difference between the teams as the score would indicate, still the visitois met a much better team and consequently went under. For Oamarn, fill the backs played well, the best being Booth, Hunter, and Toohey. They were attacking most of the time, and their passing was good. Their forwards all pUyed well, and were very quick in the open, and good in the bcruin. They obtained possession of the ball almost eVery tune, and consequently gave then- backs every show. 01 the local team, E. Goldstone, at ii i ill back, was not up to form. The three quarteis, bniart, L. Thomas, and Williams, collaied well, but had little chance of showing wiiat they could do on the attack. W. Thomas put in a good afternoon's work, his kicking especially pleasing the spectators. Grlondinning at half did some good tackling, but as the T)all seldom came his way he had very little to do. The forwards were beaten by their oppo nents, Battroy and J. Goldstone being the most prominent. After the first fifteens had finished their game, the seconds started. It was then five o'clock, and it was agreed to play one &ppll. The gams was very fasc, and the Waimate boys moie than held th<?n own. Among the backs Joyce and Land shaped very well, and among tho foi wards Wilson, Benuet, and somo piomoted firsts were the n>>st conspicuous. It was very hard to tell who really wore playing best, as darkness descended on the scene, and referee, players aud spectatois got somewhat mixed. After the gaivse the visitors were driven to the Queen's hotel, and entertained at a dinner and smoke conceit. Oamaru are sending their first iiftcen to Wainnto on Saturday fortnight and then second will in all probability visit us on some Thursday in tba near fiituio. A meeting of the second fifteen will be held in the Library Hall next Sat nrday at eight o'clock. All the -juniors are requested to turn up, as business of a % cry important , matter will be brought up. The seconds are veiy much ahve at present. South Canterbury play CasnterUn-v at Chiistchurch on the 27th of this month Waimate will be represented bv Glemlining, Rattray, and Presland. We would like to know why Thomas was not picked also.
