Meeting at Glenavy.

A Glenavy correspondent writes : On Thursday evening last about eighty young people from bot'i sides of tha ■ river> assembled in the schoolroom, with the double purpose of hearing a programme of music by "Wainiate friends and of forming- a Waitaki young' people's society. The idea of forming a Band s of Hope, or Mutual Improvement Society had J been suggested simultaneously by the Rev. Stowell and Mr Geo. Dash of Waimate, and a preliminary meeting had been held. The visitors from Waimate were Misses Strong and M. Kilgour and Messrs F. and G. Russell, W. Thomas and Geo. Dash. A very enjoyable Programme of songs, duets, quartettes and glees was rendered, among the items being some old favourites very pleasingly rendered. The applause was frequent and well deserved. Mr Dash occupied the chair and by his racy remarks and a humourous and forceful address on temperance added not a little to the - enjoyment of the evening. The Rev. Stowell also spoke of the, evils of drink and was attentivelyheard. Before singing the final glee (which, by the way, was a very pretty and appropriate item) it was unanimously resolved to form a society, to bo called the Waitaki Mutual Improvement Society. The Rev. Stowell was elected president and the following as a committee, Mrs Mathieson. Misse* McGallion, L. Butt, E. Ritchie and Smart, and Messrs- A. Slodden, Thos. Forbes, G. Park, J. Kelly and J. Dobson. The next meeting will be held on Thursday 27 th. A vote of thanks (richly deserved) to the visitors for the entertainment concluded au enthu&iastic meeting.

The annual Police Report states that there is ona policeman to every 1414 inhabitants, the cost being 2s 9£d per head. New Zealand thus, costs the least while Western Australia costs tha highest, viz , 13s o£d, the same colony having one policeman to every 376 inhabitants.—Our Wellington correspondant.
