L. M ISITT IN EDINBURGH.

In The Outlook of June 24th is published pait of a pnvate letter from Mi John Smyth, M.A., foimerly headmaster of the Waimate school ; the following is an exti net : — " I have been intei eating myself greatly of late in the missions and industnal schools of Edinbmgh. When one gets behind the scenes he is amazed at the bands of noble, lesolute men and. women who give their time, labour, love, and thought to uplift those who aie down. When one notes the labour and devotion of those woikeis, and then finds how meagie aie the lesults, he wondeis ; but the cause is not far to seek. So long as society plants deathtiaps and seductive temptations m the ioim of dunk-shops do\\n among the poor and lapsed, so long may the chinch pour thousands of pounds into the Home Mission work, and so long will noble, earnest men and women see much of then labour to ledeemlost. The Rev. Mi Ifeitt has concluded a most successful mission heie. He handled his Scotch audience adinuabJy, and his aiguments weie wan anted by convincing logic and dnven home by telling facts. He was hsie toi a foitmght, and the second week his meetings weie bettei attended than in the liist week, although even then they weie a great success. The Edinburgh papeis left him severely alone. One ieatme of his meetings was the pationage of the medical piore&sion. One of. the leading sniqeons gave an admirable addiess at one of the meetings on " Alcohol as a Food and Medicine." He clearly pointed out that it was useful only in one 01 two diseases, and that even in these he was connng lound to believe that a better ding eaii be found. As one of the chairmen—a doctor — pointed out, if the chuioh is not watchful, it is medicine that will lead the way in this gieat lefoim."
