Presentation of Prizes.
I o I , Yesterday, at the "Waimate District/ High School, the presentation of prizes to the High School Pupils toolc< place. Messrs Hamilton and Scott weio present to represent the School Committee, and the Rev. G. Barclay aivl Mr Graham represented the High School Board of Governors. YJards were first presented to the infants by' the Eev. G. Barclay, and they were then dismissed. On leturning to the other room where the other pupils were gathered, Mr Hamilton took the chair, and briefly addressed the children. Tim, he said, was his first occasion of presiding at this ceremony, and it gave him great pleasure to be' present, and-, to announce a fortnight's holiday for' the school. He proceeded to givo a short history of secondary educifcion in. Wannate, and he eulogised Board of Governors, which had always been liberal, and which spends about £200 per ,\ ear on the High School. He then called on the Eev. G. Barclay who explained how the pn/es weie arrived at and said that as no pupil had got less than 75 per cent oi marks and many had got 100f per cent, the prizes were well earned. These were ..in earnest of their work in atter lire. He expressed the wish that the children would be glad and' proud m after life to have belonged tothe school where they now were. He made apologies for the Eev. McK. Gibson ( who had been called away to Ternuk.i and. so wis unavoidably absent, and for the Rev. J. Nixon, who was unable to attend through illness. Mr But clay presented the prizes as follows : —

Mr Barclay then called on the Rev. J. Blight to address the children. Mr Blight expressed his pleasure at being present and congratulated Waimate on having such a school. He considered that Bible les^ous in school were of very great value. The Rev. A. S. Morrison also spoke and congratulated 1 the town on its school, chiefly on the High School. He took this occasion of tha.iktng the teachers of the school, on behalf of the Ministers' Assoeiatien. tor their trouble in giving the scripture lessons. Mr Baxter also expressed his thankfulness to the teachers and moved a hearty vote or thanks to them. Mr Petit ia seconding this sud that when the Waimate committee started" Bible lessons in the school they stood 'alone, but now no one could deny that it was a splendid success. On behalf of the teachers Mr Piteaithly returned thanks and hoped the school would do even better next year,. Mr Hamilton proposed votes of thanks to the Bey. G-. Barclay for distributing the prize 3, to the Ministers' Association for presenting their prize* and to the High School Board for~ their liberality. A vote of thanks to the. chair closed, the proceedings.
