The match last Thur=dav was Volunteers agamstthe Club, and after a very even contest, resulted in a draw, 'each . feide scoring a penalty goal. Play was last and' at,\times ratlitu*' furious, at least some of the players thought so, but the exhibition ol football wa^ not 'pood. There waa a total want" of combination in the Waimate team. ' Tho Club iarwaids got the ball in the fcorum, but when it got among their baok* somßthing always went Wrong iuid they Jost instead of gaining ground. * They Vent iaiox the passing game, out the passes wo often given standing, or w,-re badly directed. five-eighths, and was the most prominent man on his side. Jackson at half played pluckily. but his size is a great handicap. J. Goldstone, Elleii, and M'Tnggart were the most prominent forwards, the first named follow- \ ing up vvoll, and Ellen and M'Taggart doing a great amount of work on the line and in the serum. Ellen woulcl be an excellent forward if he kusw moi-e about the game, but on Thursday ■ he often lost ground for his side by picking the ball out of the scrum and breaking the rules generally. The forwards, as a whole, collared well, and held fcheir own very well against a heavier team. For the club, Lane at full back was fair, biit the three -qv a*ters did not show up, partly owing to the quickness of the opposing backs. Presland and Stowait on the wings were very safe, but neither showed much pace. J. Battriy and Paik, in the centre, did not play up to form, and C. Manchester, at five-eighths, although he took the ball very well from the half, always parsed without moving from the spot where lie got the ball. He should, it possiblo, draw^'the opposing man on to him before parting with the ball, and pass low. Glendinnnig was good at h ilf, 1 bat nppoared to be taking thing* easy. Of the forward-* Pre&laud, IlaMray, and Huist were most prominent, the fast two follow ing up splendidly. Hurst should remember that it doe? not pny to pick up the ball in the twiddle ot a crowd. Far better to dnbble. The English team of footballers has arrived in Au&tialia, and will soon be able to show what they can do* in the Kugby hue. It is a'gieafc pity they are not coming to New Zealand. The senior contest m Chnstohurch is more than usually interesting this year. "With three matches each to play, Christchurch and Merivale are 5 points each, Sydeohain 4.h points, and Linwood 4. points., It is hard to say which will come out on top. Colonials beat Goraldine last Thursday b,y 8 to (5, after a close game. Tasker and Mara scored for the Colonials, and Fox kicked a gonl. 'Wailu have wired asking if Woimato can play them here next Saturday ; so if the match with Temuka on Thursday does not come oif, the game this wVok will be Waimale first fiftcau v. Waihi on Saturday. Definite word from Toinuka is expected to clay. Membeis will rind a ball in Victoria Park eveiy afternoon after 3.80 n.in.
