Hay, Lincoln, on behalf of 'lns wife, asking for information re water rates and subdivision fences He also asked tor permission to erect a fence of posts, stakes aid • wire, along race about Sit, from water. — The permission was granted to erect within 4ft, wherever the fence crossed the race gates to be erected. From the Commisbioner of Ciown Lands, showing tint the water taces in the Waim-ite County totalled IHO miles, watenng 28.000 acres, and costing ,£5980, or 4, 3d per acre. The water distributed per 24 honis was , 7,200.000 galioas " He asked tor any alterations necessary to biihg the figures up to date. — Received. From Hegistrar, Caoteibuvy College, asking on behalf ol Board ot Governors that the Council dram and form 3-oad running along Enstern boundary of reserve 679 now m occupation ot Messrs McGovorm and ILlrche and W. Quinn, Mtikikihi. The oveis-oer, on being questioaed, .said no work could be done now, and the request was held over. From Mr J. H. Hay, solicitor, on behalf ou Mr J. T. From Mr Joseph Bead, Morven, asking to taase gwuel wene near his property, so as to avoid necessity oi shirting his fence. — Declined. From Mr A. W. and sums, allocated for miiil roads and bruises. The chairman said if tins was done every road m the county would be making a grab for the funds. Mr Walker said the members of the Council weie abcive the principles oi grab. Mi Hardie said thoy would be working upon differential rating if they were not cmeful. It was decided that the overseer in spect the bridge and repoit cost of a new one. also that "he examine nvei for a more suitable sue. The deputation thanked the Council and withdrew. From Mr Haymin, Longbeach, find Mr F. Powell, Ashburton, stating that the} had a good locipe for poisoning wheat. The cost was Ms 6d per bushel. Members thought that something should be done to keep down the peso, and it was decided to ask the wiitor to send down a sample bushel for trial and comparison with that ot the Council's poisoning. From Mr D. Nicholson, Cannington, .isking lor a road to be opened to give .iceess to sec. 1562, block 14. — Overseer to repoit. _* The anonymous donation received was put to the account oi the petty cash. ]t was stated that the overdraft had been reduced list year, and thus brought their bank account 'into a better condition, but their roads were very bad. They were collecting thenrates a month esu*Vr this \ear. Mr Walker &fvd there were com plaints from nil over the county about the ro ids. Ho would like to see an additional rate siruek. The time had arrived for reducing their overdraft. Even } ear over .£2OO was paid in interest, ' winch money w.is simply thrown iiwa\. The Council had no light to iriA can ovoi draft ; they should hi\ v a rate sufficient to meet its expenditure. MrHaidie said th»re would be no objection to the additional 1-16, but it was ridiculous to say that the Council could do without an overdraft. Mr Hendeison said that a penny rate would not be too much. Mr Rhodes s-nd that U-lGtbs was enough for his district Tliey did not spend their revenue Hst year. Mr Walker said if the roids had been maintained thoy would have more than spent it. Proposed by Mr Lyall, and seconded bv Mr Milne that the County rate be 11-16ths of a penny in the £ Mr Wilkji\proposed and Mr Hardio seconded, as an amendment, that the rate be }d. The mof-ion was carried on the casting vote of th* chairman. It was decided to fix a rate of 5 16ths in the £ on property withm the Tnnaru Harbour Board district. Mr Forester find ten other ratepayers, Waihao, complained of thistles growing o>i tb? old homestead noad, near M-CulV)ch's bridge, and asking that these be removed, and that part of the load bu % shingled. Overseer to report. t >_ j Major Steward and Dr. Bwclav waited on the Council, re the Krfpua settlement. The settlers had notfAiJja oient drainage to carry off the water. Parliament had passed .£lOO for deep ening the diain, bat this work would not do all that was required. It seemed that the best way would ha to authorise the settlers to carry out t,h'e woik under the sup°n ision of the .Council's Ovorsser. il<i would then irnne in tlie direction of getting the necessary funds. Mr Walker was entirely opposed to allowing gates to hd erected across any road lines. , From Mr John Brooker and six other holders of 50 acre blocks in Waikakahi, statmg that the concrete erected to divert water down races was damming bWc -the water and causing a growth of swvnp vegetation. Water was spreading over the land a iid they would like the obstruction removed. Mr Henderson said the races were w. j ll supplied, in some cases boo well. The application of Mr Wilson and otheis, Shoiwood, for metalling about 20 ehams of the road below the old homestead. — Overseer to call tenders. 4 Mr Meehan and others, Makikihi, complained that the i iver was cutting a\v,iiv the crossing at pvery flood and making it dangeious for traffic Ho uould suggest the erection of "2 chains of protective fence. Mr Plat die moved, Mr Walker seconded <md it was decided that a committee of Messrs lihodes, Studholme and the mo\er be appointed to inspect the crossing and leport. ■ Mr Walker thought that the clerk be instructed to find out if Council had power to remove fences across riverbods, and this Mas directed to be done. Had had a portion of the road ap plied for by Mr Lowe iormed and iMiv-d so as to get the surface abene water. This rond would only be lit ior hght traffic till the road dried up. Had inspected place from which Mr Ink-.1-.er complained of the removal of ni'4,il but did not think the Council could autei fere. ' It was decided to get information. lie Mr Garland's application for lengthening footbiulge Hega\e es tnnaue of cost. — Kesolved to call tender*. Had inspected the footbiidge at Waihjio, and would advise that it be leit alone in the meantime. — Held over. He noticed that willows had been cut down in several places near pro j tective fences and the fences at gravel pits. He thought gravel p'ts should be locked when not used toi sheep — It was decided not to fence gravel pits in the meantime. Had served be\ eral notices on settleis to clear gorse on roads. The overseer was instructed to report on the load applied for last month by Mr Shirley and others. A letter was received from the clerk stating that the clerical work of the Council had greatly increased since he took charge and if any increase were made in his salaiy he Would be very grjitoful and uould be,%eiy grateful and would endeavour 'to show that their confidence was not nubplaced. It was decided to give an increase of £00, making £250 per annum.
