Waimate Borough Council.
The usual monthly meeting was held on Monday evening ; present — His Worship the Mayor (Dr Barclay), and Councillors Coltman, Mann, Inkster, Cameron, Petit, and O'Connor. COKRhSPONDENCK. From the committee of the Smithfield Freezing Works Picnic, thanking Council for use of park, and enclosing £1 Is donation to hospital funds. From Hallway Department stating that a crossing, would be made .as desired if Council would pay cost, £14. The matter was left in the hands of His Worship the Mayor and Councillor Petit
to obtain all information on the matter. Fiom Colonial Secretary, acknowledging leceipt of result of unimproved values poll dud informing Council that it should have been sent to the Government Punter. Fiom Mr T. Dugdnle asking pei mission to erect a temporary building in iron on section near Union Bank. — Request granted. Fiom Mr Enos Bishop asking permission to erect a wooden outbuilding with an iron root in his section in Queen Street. Decided that Mr Bishop be allowed toerect an non shed at the back of his section. From Mrs Beaton and 17 other ratepayers and residents m the Mcmity asking for a lamp to be erected at corner of Herbert Street and Parsonage Road. From Mr E. Bannerman pointing out the necessity for lamp at the corner of Rhodes and Manse Streets. A good deal of discussion took place, members mentioning many places where lamps were urgently required. It was said there were four lamps in Manse Street, but it was generally conceded that the one in Parsonage Road was urgently needed. Finally the matter was held over for the Works Committee to leport at next meeting. From T. M'Connell, Naylor Street, calling attention to a nuisance caused by a neighbour keeping pigs five yards from his door. — Referred to the Inspector. From Mr R. G. Baxter, asking for use of Council's committee room for a few weeks till his office was fitted up, and also asking to purchase a drawing table which was in the loom. The first request was granted, the table to be lent in the meantime. • A motion was passed expressing sympathy with Councillor Jones in his late beveie illness and congratulating him an his reeo\ cry. The draft of agreement with the newTown Clerk was read and approved. A deferred report oithe late Town Clerk
shoved that ashphalt crossings would h» conmeived when weather permitted. He would suggest that a shed be erected behind Council Chambers for mixing ashphalt in wet weaJther. "With re'gaid to the drain behind Council Chambers ho thought that a concrete bottom should be put in in preference to small pipes. Councillor Petit thought a little should, be done at a time as funds allowed and finally the section should be turned into a pleasure ground for the public, planted with flo Avers and having seats put round, The matter was well diocussed and finally held over. The ne\t meeting was fixed for the 25th April. Councillor Petit diew attention to thequantity of weeds gi owing on path near Presbyterian Cluuch and it was decided to have this cleared. Councillor Coltman said there was on the pavsheet three day's work to Lille a . This man was employed bv the year and could not charge the Council for da\sashe had uot them to spare. It had been stated at the table that Lillev could not always get through the woik he wdb supposed to do. Lillov was paid to do the woik and he did it well, but Councillor Coltman objected to paying unnecessary money to him. The agreement of the contractor was read and bore out this contention. A copy of the balance-sheet wao received from the auditoi-geneial The deik said a crossing had been broken in John Street, and it was decided to give the drrver an oppoitnmty of paying and if he would not do this to sue hj in for a breach of the Boiough byelan s. Accounts amounting to X'3l lls XOd were passed. The Council then sat as a Domain Boaid. The caretaker's report was lead and considered satisfactory. He asked that he be allowed to extend the garden m front of the cottage.— Extension allowed. Domain accounts, £G 4a sd, weie passed.
