WAIKAKAHI BALLOT.
The chawing foi sections in the Waikakahi Estate took place on Wednesday at the couithouse. On Tuesday the Canteibmy Land Boaid, Mi Sydney Weetman piesiding, sat to examine applicants and aftei sitting late at infill bad to hmsh on Wednesday morning. Theie weie t-'O2 applicants-, making 8242 applications The 13oaul stmck out 85, and 31 did not appeal, so that 68(5 went to the ballot. At 2.30 the ballot commenced, the coin thouse being ciowded. Seats foi ladies weie pio\ided inside the coint. Mi Sydney Weetman piesided, the membeis ot the Canteibiny Doaid and Mi Maich, Supenntendent of Settlements, being piesent. BeioiPtbe ballot commenced, Mi M'Lich'an (c\ M II.Iw) lose and said he would like to addles the public Mi Weetman objected, but Mi M'Laehlan insisted and said he objected to people who had up to £1-500 in piopeity being admitted to the ballot while otheis with much leus weie not, also against applicants who had not been examined being allowed to ballot. The business of the afternoon then piocecded. This took a good deal of time, the stall not being laige enough foi the woik. As each lot was diawn the name of the applicant, as well as his oi hei wife oi husband, was stiiu'k out of all othei sections. Gia\e (Oamatu) took his place The balloting continued till 12 o'clock on Wednesday night, commence d at 9 on Thmsday morning and finally finished at 1 .30 on Thmsday atfceinoon.
