Board of Education.
The South Cantoi bin y Board of Education held its monthly meeting on Wednesday. From the Timaru Herald's report of the proceedings, we gather the items of interest to this part of the district. The report of the scholarship was presented by the convener, Rev. Geo. Barclay. It stated that there -mere 20 senior and 36 junior candidates representing 21 schools, about one-third the number in the district. Theie were no candidates from private primary schools to take advantage of the special scholarship offered by the High Hchool Board of Governors." The following are lists of the candidates who '• qualified " by obtaining 60 per cent, of marks, and not loss than 25 per cent, in any subject, the school each had attended, the marks gained, and the scholarship fund awarded :—: — Senior, possible marks, 950 — Ada O'Callaghan, Timaru Girls' High School, 759, £12 10s ; W. J. Buckley, Waimata District High School. 687, £22 10s, phis £4 for District High School fees if demanded ; Margaret Hunt, Timaru Girls' High School, 665, £2 10s; Margaret Bonaldsou, Timaru Girls' High School, 642, £2 10s : J. G. Gow, Timaru Boys' High School, 642, £2 10s; Annie Smith, Waimate District High School, 635, £2 10s, plus £4 for fees if demanded ; J. A. Bartrum. Timaru Boys' High School, 620, Timaru High School exhibition, with prospect of financial aid, if the Waimate District High School fees above mentioned ha^ c not to bo paid. All these are two year scholarships. O'Callaghan transfers to Christchurch, and theivfoie receives the amount of Timaru High School fee (£lO, and book allowance, £2 10s. Buckley recerres lodging allowance .£2O, and book allowance £2 10s ; Hunt, Ronaldson, Gow, and Barfrnm take free seats at tho Timaru High School. The following also qualified : — G. G. Priest, Timaru Boys' High Sohool 610 ; T. Hazleton, Waimate District High School, 600; W. H. Talbot, Tu.nuka District High School, 591 ; Muriel Ten. nent, Timaiu Girls' High School, 578; Freja L. Ziesler, Timaru Girls' High School, 572 ; A. Orton, Timaru Boys' High School, 500; Amy Cooper, Timuka District High School, 504; J. Mr-nzies, Timaru Boys' High School, s<)l , Elsie Gappor, Timaru Girls' High School, 5J.7 ; A. Cross, Timaru Boys' High Joliool, 503. Two boys and one girl failed to qualify. Jim or, possible niar-ks, 800. — Prt-ey Jones, Pleasant Point, 5.81, £-22 10s ; E,. M. Goldsman, Timaru Main, 575, £-2 10s; Florence M. Hunt, Timaru Mam, 560, £2 10s ; W. H. Mackay, Timaru Main, 553, £2 10s ; C. Foweraker, Wainaate District High Sohool, 551, £2 10s. (plus £4. for fees if demanded); S. O'Callaghan, Waimataitai, 536. .£l2 103 ; R, H. Sinclair, Timaru Main, 518, £2. 10s ; Bridget Ij. Leary, Hilton, 506, £22. 10s; Kate R. Wright, Gapes' Vallex, 494, £22 10s ; Ellen Beattie, Seadown, 482, £22 10s. O'Callaghan transfers to Christchurob, Foweraker is assigned to Waimate District High School, the rest to Timaru High School, where the Governors give free tuition. The following also qualified :— G. McL. Kogben, "Wmmataitai, 416; Noia M. Boston, "Winchester, 416; Annie Simmons, Milfold, 410 ; Maria McCahon, Timaru Mam, 412; Y. Oliver, Pleasant Point, 402; F. J. Davoy, Tunuka, 400. Seventeen failed to get half marks, 'and two who got half the total failed in one subject. The report of the Scholarships Committee was adopted, with thanks to the committee and the examiners. The architect was instructed to report on the request for new cooking appliances in the janitor's house, Waimate. Mr Keith said he knew two instances of parents pocketing £7 or £8 out of the £10 allowed to scholarship holders for lodging money by duvmg bargains with those Who boarded the children. He did not think £20 was too much and con* sidered the Board should have a guarantee that the money was used for the purpose 'intended. Oh the motion of Messrs Talbot and Comrie— " That before paying the lodging allowance to scholarship-holders the Board reserves the right to have , proof that the amount has been or will be expended on the object for which it is granted."
