Caledonian Society's Concert.
The society has provided many An excellent concert for its patrons on Bdxing Night during the past 24 Jeara, but we venture the opinion that it has seldom given irior'e eatisf action by its efforts in this direction than it did on Monday evening. The names oi the singers alone ■were sufficient to ensure a full house. The takings were L 47 odd, and every'part of the hall was full, numbers being'turned away unable to gain admission. At' first BigHt the programme appeared to be but a nieagre one, apart from the bagpipe music and Highland dancing, it consisted of but a dozen or 1 So of items. But the concert committee knew what it was about, and rightly judged that encores would be the order of the evening. As a matter of fact the demands of the audience} heartily responded to by the singers, more th*n doubled the length of the programme. We must have our little grumble, however. The entertainment, should not have been called a " Grand Scotch Concert." Grand though it was, it was not eVen prominently " Scotch, ""and in: that rflspect no doubt disappointed som* » in the audience. Of the singers, if ,we may be alldwed to make any. distinction, wa should say Miss Blaney and Mr W. Farquhar Young gave most satisfaction. After their rendering of the duet " Hunting tower," they, several times bowed' their acknowledgments, and at last were, obliged to repeat the" two concluding verses. Mr De M*ub of course stands alone, his share in the programme being unique, on account of its originality and excellence. Though he was last ,- on the programme and the hour late the audience t would take "no denial and he had to give two additional -songs.' " Mr o'. P. Collins accompanied most of < the singers, Miss Morrison giving . occasional ij help; A quartette, unaccompanied, " Sweet and' Low," was introduced in the second part." The item might with advantage have' been omitted 1 ." -With this exception,', and' the trifling one that Mr Young changed the order,, of his songs, the' printed programme , was-, strictly > adhered to. To give our readers who were not 'present' some idea of what they-mis§ed ? we subjoin a list of , the' items" rendered. ' Tart L — D. Cameron, Bagpipe' selection.' ,Mr W.
