Waimate County Council.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held on Wednesday last — present — Mesirs El worthy (chair), Studholnie, Henderson, Douglas, Walker, Hardie and Lyall, Mr B. H. lihodes wrote apologising for absence from meeting and for his failure 'to report on the road mentioned at last meeting, as he and Mr Lyall had not been able to meet. In connection with the road past Mr Coca's and across Otaio liver, he considered that such a road would prove serviceable to many settjere, sad he enclosed a letter from Mr A. Cope, l&nd in which he offered, to give the land cm condition that the road was put along the boundary fence and that the portion required be fenced. — Held over, Th» following correspondence was read : — From Major Steward, stating that the Government, jn addition to £150 already promised hagl allocated anpther" J6lOO to ■o.e spent in forming and fencing road to Mr Clement's property. — It was decided to have land lately purchased vested in the name of the Queen and that the work of fencing and forming the road be at once taken in hand and the money obtained. From the Baine urging ' the council to bear the cost of widening i\\e Goijje road at a corner to allow of the widening ol the Kapua drain as askefl fprby Mr Broderick and enclosing correspondence from Department of Lands on the subject. It was resolved by four to' three that the engipeer be instructed to widen the road as asked for, the cpst not to exceed £16. It was resolved that the charge of 10s 6d for slaughter licenses be adhered to for year 1899. ' Mr M'Clure wrote asking whether the council would agree to tjie closing of road between R,S. 33916/17. The balance-sheet for the half-year ended Sept. 30 was received from the Audit Department and adopted. Messrs E. Campbell and Sons wrote stating their willingness to give a site fpr a stockbridge at Rocky Point on conditions mentioned in Mr M'Farlane'a letter. — To be considered when Mr Milne was present, The Waihao water-race committee's re. port was read. It stated that at a meeting held, on Nov. 25th it was decidod to notify the contractor that six men be put on before Dec. Ist, or committee would put them on at the contractor's expense. At a meeting held on Deo. 19 Messrs Smart, Butt and Morris objected to pay water maintenance charges as they wor* not supplied w;th water. The comimttoe considered they should not bo rated. The water race contractor reported that he had put on extra workmen at his own expense, and. that there was now a good flow of water in tl>e races, only two being without water, Mr J. Morris, chairman of a meeting of ratepayers in Waihao water district, wrote stating that there had been no water in some of the rapes for the last six months, and that six men should bo employ »d, until such time as water flows in all the races. Mr R. Elm 3 applied fqr permission to erect a swing gate across road at Pareora. — Held over. It was resolved to inform the Waihao water committe* that as formorly advised, if the committee is of opinion that the wor^ of cleaning the races is not being carried out, the committee i 3 expected to inform council of same, but that m the absencp of any direct statement from the committee to the effect that the contractor is not carrying out his contract satisfactorily, this council would pay monthly the amount due to the contractor by terms of his agreement. It \va3 rasolved also to notify the committet that all reports must be in the hands of the clerk on the Saturday previous to the meeting. On the motion of Mr Douglas, seconded by Mr Henderson and carried, '< That this council places on record its appreciation of the careful and efficient iuanner in which Mr W. Coltm,an has carried out his duties as the council's representative on the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board.' 1 Pareora water qommittee reported everything satisfactory. From the Hon. Major Steward, Btating that Government had resolved to remove the gates from Studholme, Hannaton road, and make same an open crossing. The Eev. G. Barclay wrote' thanking the council for having appointed, him as its representative on the Timaru High School Board. — Received. ' Renewals slaughter licenses were granted to D. B. Buckingham for U.S. 5726, Deep Creek, 'and D. A. Buckingham for R.S. 12,800 for the ensuing year. Accounts amounting to 73 2d were passed, and the chairman and treasurer were empowered id sign cheques. The Overseer's report was read. He paid that reserves 811 and 812," Waihao, were quite unfit for shingle purposes and it was resolved that these" be closed and handed over to the, ' Government in exchange for others being opened. The road from McNamaras corner towards Waimate and Studholme needed metalling badly. — The Overseer was instructed to prepare a statement showing cost 1 and present same at next council meeting. It was resolved " That the road asked for by Mr Douglas be taken over by the council on consideration that council will not bo required to shingle it within three years. Messrs Elworthy, Ehodes, Lyall, Hardie and Douglas -wave appointed to inspect the road asked for at Upper Pareora. It was dacided to call tender* for the right to cut cocks foot on council roads. The tender of C. Dash, at .£1 19s Gd per hundred for dog oollars was accepted. The following tenders were accepted for stock rangorship and dog collection*, Upper and Lower Pareora and Otaio, D, Watt »t £1 per week and 6d per collar ; Do«p Creek, Makikihi and South Waihao, E. George 10s, and 6d ; Hakataramea «vnd North A^aihao, M. Kennedy 10s, and 6d. It was resolved that all water rate 3 and charges unpaid by 9th January 1899 ha ■ued for. The clerk wa» authorised to close tho office for the usual holidays.
