Charitable Aid Board.
At the meeting of the South Canterbury Charitable Aid, Board, held at Timaru on Wednesday, quite a long discussion took place as to whether Mr R. Nicol, the present mayor, or Dr Barclay, the mayor-elect, was, with Mr Walker, the other representative of Waimate County and Borough. In the notification received from the County Council, the Mayor of Waimate was stated t« be one of the representatives, and as Mr Nicol was still Mayor, the chairman was of opinion that that gentleman had been appointed, and thought that Dr Barclay's position as a representative was open to question on tha grounds of his relation to the Board aa medical officer of the Waimate Hospital. Eventually, Mr Nicol retained his seat. If it is now decided that Dr Barclay •hould hold the position, he caq only obtain it by Mr Nicol residing. As the Board and not the local body would have the right to fill the vacancy, it would not follow that a representative of this district would receive the appointment. The Waimate Hospital Trustees wrote asking for balance of their year's demand for maintenance, ,£259, and JJI7B was granted in the meantime. A woman at Waimate, with a crfppled husband and ten children, applied for assistance, and the case was left to the temporary oare of Mr Walker, pending the police report on the circumstances.
