WAIMATE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the above was held on Monday evening ; present — His Worship the Mayor (chair), and Councillors Coltman, Collett, O'Connor, Petit, T. H. Mann, and Cameron. An apology was received from Councillor Inkster. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The clerk stated that the transfer from Mr Ferriter to Mr Corcoran had not been completed, and the clerk asked for advice. It was decided that the matter be loft in the hands of the clerk. The clerk's action in recommending the Mayor as the Council's representative on the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board and Board of Trustees. was confirmed. Cprrespondence was read as follows : — From Major Bamfield asking Council to nominate a member on the Timaru High School Board of Governors. The clerk stated that in accordance with the declaration, he had appointed Mr Smith to represent the Council. If was decided to appoint Mr Petit to represent the Council on the Hospital Board of Trustees. ,A deputation, consisting of Messrs Bailey, Atwill, and M'Lennan, waited on the Council ""with respect to lease occupied by Ms C. Bpyce. They asked that a new lease, of the section .might be given the Saleyards Company for at«rm of 21 years, and that whan other sections near fell jnto the Council, the company could get a ldng' lease on them. The- deputation also 'asked ; that the Council give them assistance by making the rent as low as possible.'"' After mentioning 'the advantages which would accrue to the town by the erection of the yards, and that the company was being well supported, the deputation withdrew. Proposed by Councillor Coltman and seconded by Councillor Cameron " That part 'of ''the section leased by C. Boyce (about & acres) be transferred to theWai7nate County Saleyards Co. and that a new lease be granted for 21 years, at" an annual rtratal.jrf.29 6d for the .first seven and £1 10s for the remainder." — Carried. _" The dog tax>was fixed at ss, except for sheep and rabbit dogs.
It was resolved to have several matters attended to m Victoria Park. Councillor Coltman thought they should put seats along the sides of the oval and it was decided to have i,his done at the same tune as the other work. Fx'om Major Stewad, enclosing reply of Mr Cadman re larger carriages. This showed that according to enquiries the accomoilatiori had heen found sufficient. The stationmaster said he had never seen the train overcrowded. From Traffic Manager stating that the matter of proper sheep and cattle loading yards at Waimate would be considered and a reply sent at an early date. From Major Steward, stating that he thought the ballot for sections on the Waikakahi should take place in Wahnate. The matter was not under the control of the Minister, but was dealt with by the Land Board at Ghristchurch. He had represented the matter to the Commissioners, and had also asked that it be locally advertised in both papers. He concurred in the proposal to invite the Minister tor Lands to Waimate and should be pleased to accompany him. It was xmanimiously resolved that the Council's thanks be forwarded to Major Steward for the trouble he had taken in connection with various matters recently brought before him. The Clerk stated he had received the unimproved value of the Borough. It was .£24,026, and a rate of 3&d. in°the £ would be required to bring in the same rent as derived from a shilling rate. Further discussion en the matter was lj held over. " *T It was decided to hold next meeting on , Wednesday Dec. Ist. Accounts amounting to £86 9s 8d were passed for payment and the meeting ended.
