A deputation, consisting df 'Messrs Boreham,- Clement, Scott, and Broadbent, waited on the Council with a petition asking that jbody to_oall a public meeting to take steps to have the .ballot for the Waikakahi Estate held in "Waimate. The deputation pointed .out that Oamaru and Timaru were trying to have the ballot held there, and if they did not bestir them : selves they would lose the opportunity. Some hundreds of people would come to ;the town at the time of the selection, ithey would stay about a -week, and would known to the business people. Then Ifoose -who were successful would .naturally come back to Waimate for ;their goods. ' " The, deputation then withdrew. Members generally recognised the im■pprtance,.of taking immediate steps, and at , was .resolved, on the motion of Messrs Petit, and "Mann, "That a public meeting lap called for Monday evening in the library Hall, and that it be advertised in l)oth local papers." From Major Steward, asking if ■Council approved of four sections fronting Victoria Park being sold. It was decided to ask the member to have the sections sold in Wainaate. - The Clerk was instructed to ask the Government to furnish the total unimproved' value of the borough. His Worship said a number of ratepayers had spoken to him concerning the advisability of having saleyards erected at Waimate. He thought it would be a very good thing for the Borough. This also was a matter for a public meeting. Perhaps the matter could be mentioned at the public meeting on Monday evening. It behoved Waimate to make accommodation for new settlers who would be in the neighbourhood very soon. The money would be well spent. One man said he had 5 shares in the Studholme Junction Company and he would' gladly throw f them up and put' the money in a" Wai- ' mate yard. „ * Mr Petit said he had once spent a day
in going to Makikihi and measuring the yards there, but, although no time was lost, the Junction had forestalled them. He was pleased to see the matter again brought up. It was resolved that the Mayor and Councillors Coltman and Jones form a committee to obtain information regarding the forming of saleyards and report at the public meeting to be held on Monday night. Councillor Petit moved, Councillor Mann seconded, and it was carried — "That this Council, in the interests of the public, request the Hon Major Steward to interview the Minister of Bailways and endeavour to obtain larger carriages on the Wairnate-Studholme line. Speaking to his motion, Councillor Petit said that thepopulation had increased since the carriages had been placed there and if a few people more than ordinary were travelling the carriages were packed. Tenders were opened for kerbing and asphalting as follows : — S. Busbach £138 Os lOd (accepted) : J Hiorns £158 Os 7id. Accounts amounting to £46 4s 3d were passed and the meeting ended. The Council then tat as a Domain Board. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. The caretaker's report showed that the Park was in good order. He would like a few more plants and some more seats. If timber were supplied he would make the seats. It was resolved to accede to the request. Accounts amounting to £7 12s 2d were passed, and the Board rose.
He : '• "What J not hard up this year ; I can hardly keep my nose above water." She : " You wouldn't find it so difficult if you didn't keep it so often above brandy and water." Wife (after reading newspaper) : " I see by the statistics that the number, of mar* riages decrease, while the suicides increase/ Husband: " 'Oh, 1 yesj that easily explained, you know 1 - Men are beginning to prefer th§ less p&ihful way of getting cut of th» world."
