On Wednesday evening about 40 of the volunteers paraded under the command of Capt. Coltinnn. Lieut.-Col. Bailey and Sergt. Major Jonas were present. The latter instructed the men in the physical drill and the company was also put through the manual exercises. Mr A. Philip announce* that he has imported a choice assortment of wreaths, globe* and grave ornaments. These are veiy tasteful in design and are well worth inspecting. An interesting oerernony will take place on Thursday next, the hoisting of the Union Jack procured for the school on the flagpole on the ground. The children will sing and the Band will be in attendance. The Social »nd Debating Club's meeting •on Tuesday evening was well attended by members and friends, the business for the ■evening being a fruit social. Some members ■essayedto catch the "twirling trencher " or intercept " Eeuben and Bachel " while others ventilated the subject of -draughts at side ■tablet or £poke to appreciative hearers withomt •a time limit and in divers other ways plunged anto enjoyment. By refreshment time $, debating record was established, in that every present took part in iht discussion of fruit. This meeting closed the session. The cricket season w*s opened on Thursday afternoon last, tlwre being a good muster of players. Teams were picked, and a scratch match played. After the game, Mr W. M. Hamilton, on behalf of the Club, presented Mr C. J. Goldstone, hon. Eec, with .a cricket bag, as a slight recognition of his services to Ahe Club. Mr Goldstone suitably responded. Inspector Gow examined tne Hannaton School on Oct. 6th. The schedules of result! have just been received from the Inspector .*nd every pupil -presented passed, giving the maximum result, 100 per cent Every pupil -on the school roll was present and those in ■the four highest standards had an average of 4'l sums correct out of 5. This result must he very-gratifying to the parent* and to the Headmaster (Mr Walsh).
