A Meeting of the Quadrille Assembly Committee was held in the Libiary Hall on Tuesday evening. It was decided to hare u ball to wind up the »eason. The secretaiy was instructed to have tickets and programmes printed. The whole affair is to be carried out in stylo, and given good weather a very successful season will be fittingly brought to a close ob the 6th. Tickets were fixed at 3s 6d.

Footbaul. — The Waimate first fifteen journeyed to Timaru on Thureday to play against Geraldine. Being the last match of the season it wa» very stubbornly contested and ended without score on either side. This leaves Waimate and the Timaru Colonials with An equal number of points for the '98 Cup, ' i. match will have to be played in Timaru to decide the Premiership, but very likely Waimate will forfeit the game. Our Makikihi correspondent writes : — The bachelors of Makikihi held their annual ball on Friday night, the 16th. Jupiter Pluviua had evidently set his mind upon making things very uncomfortable for those who sholud essay forth to the gathering. However, in spite of the elements, a large party assembled in Mr Meehan's grain store. The dancing room was very prettily decorated with flags and other material, and the side rooms were conveniently fitted up- About 100 couples took the floor and danced to -the music of Messrs Wilson and Meyers .(2). M«ssrs Lindsay and Childs gave latisfaciiion as M.C.'t. During ,the evening some longs •were sung and much appreciated. A splendid supper was provided, and (.he gathering" dispersed just in time to prevent Sol fiom seeing them home.

We would remind our readers that the farcical comedy, " The G-uv'nor," will be produced at the Oddfellows' Hall next Thursday evening by our local amateurs* The club have been hard at work for some time, and judging from rehearsals the play should go well. Special scenery has been painted by Mr Barry Jaggers, and the comedy will be staged with that attention to detail characteristic of the Waimate amateurs. The reserved seats are being taken up very fast, and we would advise patrons to secure th«ir seats at once to avoid disappointment, as it is expected a full house will welcome the play. The annual meeting of the_ Star Cycling Club was held in the Club Boom on Wedneiday evening, Mr G. S. Mathias in the chair. The secietary (Mr J. Manchester, junr.) read a balance sheet showing a credit balance of £7 18s 3d, which was adopted with the report. Mr J. F. Douglas was re-elected president, -Messrs G. S. Mathias, W. J. Wills, S. Binney, H. E. Mann, W. J. Dailey and Nicol vicepresidents. Mr B. Geddes was elected captain ■and Mr Jas. Manchester deputy captain. Mr J. Manchester and Mr W. Nelson were reelected as secretary and treasurer respectively. Messrs Chas. Dash, T. Goldstone, D. Tee, J. Dean, C. Manchester and D. Sheppard were -elected by ballot as committee. • The annual subscription wai fixed at 2s 6d. A hearty vote ■of thanks was accorded the retiring officers. The meeting of the MaMkihi Band of Hope *on Tuesday evening was well attended. The secretary occupied the chair. Waimate •visitors provided -a programme of music and ■recitations, and a temperance lesson. ,-This^ weeks-South FarmerY -Gazette is to band, and contains a mass of information for farmers and others. The •whole paper betokens progress. Next week it will be incieased four pages, -and a serial story by Conan Doyle will be commenced. The pi ice of the pajjer has been somewhat reduced. Friendly Societies'' Sports. — k meeting <of this Committee was held in the Oddiellows' Hall on Tuesday night, Bro. J. W. Freeman in the chair, about 15 members ■being present. The outgoing committee reported- a credit balance on Jait meeting. Officers were appointed as iollows : — Presi- * <lent, Dr Barclay ; vice-president, N.G. Oddfellows and C.E. Foresters ; treasurer, Bro. J. S. Butcher ; secretary, Bro. A. M. Taaffe ; starter, Mr H. Middleton ; timekeepers, Bro. CJoltman, and Messrs Sinclair and Binney ; judges, Bros. Atwill, J. Manchester, H. E. Mann, &nd Mr A. Manchester; judges of wrestling, Messrs M. OBrien and M. Thyne ; handicappers for foot events, Mr W. J. Dailey and Bro. Betten^ cycling, Mr G. Miller and Bro. J. Manchester. The programme of last .year with a few additions was adopted. A strong committee was appointed so work up a good entertainment for the evening of the sports. It was resolved to offer the privileges for sale at public auction at an early date. The secretary was instiucted to obtain prices for printing, and to get the programmes glinted and distributed as -early as possible. The usual vote to the chair terminated the proceedings. " Wa notice Shacklbton & Grant are opening up a, large assortment of men's" and" youth's " Club " straw hats, from Is to 3s 6d, and as the sun is making itself felt, thty will be in good demand.— JLdvi.
