SATURDAY, SEPT. 10, 1898.

'There must be something radically wrong with the financial basis on which the Waimate Public Dibrary is attempted -to »be carried on. A short time ago the Borough Council granted the institution -the, usual annual subsidy of £25 And at riast 'meeting _a request for funds with which to jpaint the Library building was to by a further grant of j6lO. It -was elicited from the deputation winch .waited on the Council on .behalf of the "Library that the Library Committee had recently realised -£40 by the sale of the billiard table, that the amount had gone in. current expenses, and that for some -time before the table was sold, the institution had been run at .a loss. Jt was jalso stated. that though expenses'2ia.dbeen rreduced to a minimum the committee Jiad not;been able to buy new books for #pme time. If ,with j, subsidy of £25 a

bulk of which it stands a very good chance of losing- as things are going on, and the Council should insist on the subscribers malting ends meet without any further draw on the Borough funds. We have to apologise to those who were tin able to procure the Advertiser the last issues. The first week's issue was sold out almost immediately, and more copies were printed. Although a large number extra weie put on the succeeding week, that issue was also sold out. This week we have had still more copies printed. It is possible that in making out the lists, some subscribers, names have been omitted. "We shall be glad to hear from any such, and hope that everyone will be supplied. It is very gratifying to find that there is such a keen demand for " The Little Advertiser," and that it is Icnown and appreciated from St. Andrews to Glenavy, and from thence to Hakateramea. This should be of interest to advertisers. The system of placing reading matter on each side of advertisements ■makes It vastly superior for their purpose than the ordinary large paper, where advertisements are gradually pushed further and further back, till at last it is only by a diligent search that they «an be found. The Advertiser has twice the circulation (both in town and country) of any paper in the district. . The very small charge, and the brightness and freshness of the news supplied, is responsible for this. "With more advertising support it is intended to further increase the number of pages of the paper, although- the size of page will remain as at present. ,As before pointed out, this size is the handiest for reading, and it aftords better opportunities for the display of advertisements, a desirable combination a large paper could not hope to obtain.
