CORRESPONDENCE.

Correspondents' opinions are not necessarily ouis.

(to the editor.) Sib. With a view of injuring you with a small section of the pubho, three gentlemen have been named by a publication (which therefore forfeits the title of journal) as promoters of the Advertiser. It is well known that those gentlemen are not running the Advertiser, but even if they had been, the intended injury would miscarry. Those names are in Waimate synonomus with fearless opposition to a well known evil. If the Advertiser speaks on the various crooked things that come under notice it will be welcome whoever runs it. The public here is sick of " journalism " that seeks only the filling of the proprietor's pocket and leaves the public to be fleeced by genuine itinerant quacks, bogus lottery promoters and all that like, local and general. Hit out then Mr Editor, hit hard and though. you may los«--»-

little advertising you will reap the support of an appreciative pubho. — I am, etc., AfcTISLUSH.

(to the editob) Sir, — It is customary when replying to & newspaper statement to do so in the columns ot the paper publishing the statement, unlesi the opportunity is denied, or the treatment accorded is dishonourable. It is on the latter giound that I ask for space in your journal to reply to the editor of the Waimate Times, who in his publication stated that I was a chief promoter of the Advertises. My letter contiadicting this wag brief, but still Mr Smith published only two-thirds of it, and did not as is customary indicate that he had not published the letter in full. Added to this questionable action he endeavoured to " hoodwink the public" by a series of questions. These questions, which even he could scarcely expect to be answered merely for the gratification of his abnormal curiosity, were so framed as to convey wbat he knew to be a false impression. Ingenious lying truly, but this disgusting squirming is a very regrettable prostitution ot journalism, and is accentuated by the fact that it is simply on account of a legitimate business opposition. Mr Matthew Smith made ceitaiu statements about me, they were untrue as he is aware. Ido not ex* pect him to retract or apologise, these being the only aotions by which it would be possible for him to surprise me. — I am, etc., Gso. Dash.
