THE LIGHT OF OTHER DAYS.
(to the editor.) Sir, — " The Waimate Times has hitherto been the only paper punted in "Waimate," says the editor of the paper. When I read that I had to read it a second time and then pinch myself to make sme I was jiot dreaming. Is it a fault of memory, or is it a sentiment of shame that leads him to ignore the fact that our daikness was once illuminated by the Waimate Star, and that he himself, Mr Matthew Smith, was the proprietor of the illumination ? It is a long while to look back, but I really believe that as regards local matters the Waimate Star was a brighter publication than the Times. "Therefore, it ought not to be cast into oblivion from any feeling of shame, though there may exist an excusable sense of mortification that the intervening yeais have demonstiatecl no advance in merit over what may be called his " Suckling " stage. I am, etc., Old Bosh.
