The foitnightly dance of the Quadiillo Assembly -\\ as held on Tuesday evening in the Oddfellow-s' Hull, there being a capital attendance of niembeis. A geneial meeting will be held in the Libiaiy Committee room to-night Oub Hunter conespondcnt writes :— Theie was a very good attendance at the conceit and dance held on the sth in aid of the school funds. In the Absence of Mr Teschemaker Mr Pitcaithly took the chair. The evening was wet and several performers weie away so that the conceit was not as good as it would have been- The dance, to the music of Mr C. Collins was a thorough success. There was a bountiful supply of lefieshments and everyone was in great good humour. Financially the turnout was all that could be desired. The Waimate Volunteers paraded under the command of Capt. Coltman in the Oddfellows' Hall on Wednesday evening. Over 40 members weie piesent and were put through the firing exercises and physical drill. Stewart, sole representative of the patentee of a new music-leaf turner, called at our office on Thursday and exhibited the device- The instrument, which is simplicity itself, will commend itself to musicians. In appearance it is like ihe ordinary rack on a piano and is hung by two hooks. The bottom of each page of the music is held by one of six clips, each at the end of a brass rod. When a leaf has to be turned all that the performer has to do is to press a small lever at the right-hand side and the sheet is instantly thrown across. A single loaf or an unbound book can be manipulated with equal facility to that of a bound volume. The device is as suitable for violinists as for pianoforte players. When not wanted for players it can be used perfectly well for holding magazines, saving the trouble of turning the leaves, especially when lying down. Mr Stewart intends calling on the residents of Waimate shortly.
