} The usual monthly meeting of the above was held on Wednesday; present — Messrs El worthy (chair), Studholme, Ehodes, Lyall, Douglas, Walker and Murphy. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read as follow* : — From Lands and Survey Department r« Clement's road, asking that road and land purchased be vested in the Crown. ,The chairman said they would»then be in * ( worse position than before. ■ Tfiey had «xceeded the £150 by £20 or £30. He thought the best course would be to refer them to the Minister of Lands. After the letter from the Minister was read, this was Agreed to. Prom Hutt County Council re New Zealand Counties Association, saying that a meeting •would be held on Friday 12th August, and that Waimate Council forward any business and the address of their delegate. . ,Mr .Rhodes thought it would be well to send a, dele*gate on the possibility of the Local Government Bill coming before Parliament, and after a short discussion it was decided to send the chairman to represent this Council. From the N.M. and A. Co., asking Council to purchase road-grader. — Letter received. From Mr H. D. Bell (Wellington^ enclosing opinion on the status of the Hospital Trustees,

being the same as read before the Trustees on July 11th. The opinioa of Messrs Perry, Perry and Kinnerney on that of Mr Bell wai also read. The chairman considered that the opinions of Messrs Bell and Hamilton were correct. The question was what were they to do now. At a meeting of the South Canterbury Charitable Aid Board it was resolved that Messrs Perry, Perry and Kinnerney draw up a Bill legalising the position of the Trustees and that it be submitted to Messrs Elworthy, Nicol, Talbot, Moore and Douglas, although as yet no official comunication had been received. He thought there would be no objection to that being done. He knew there was an agitation in favour of separation, but ha thought the tendency now was rather consolidate local bodies. He did not see why the matter should" have been raked up after things had gone on for so long. Messrs Studholme and Walker favoured Bepaiation, as the best way for the ratepayers. Mr Ehodes said the Trustees should live and let live with Timaru. In congested districts the need for charitable, aid was greater. The Waimate borough needed more than the county. They would have Mackenzie and Geraldine breaking off. It wa» necessary that outlying districts, should subscribe. Mr Douglas sa.d the Board here invited the Timaru Board to send a deputation and showed them the Hospital, they examined
- everything and at a conference of the two Boards the expert they brought with them admitted that Waimate needed what it asked for and a good deal more. They got their architect to draw up plans, and at the last moment spiung this upon "Waimate. The Timaru Board would not let Waimate live and let live. The chanman said they might well let the matter stand over. Mr Douglas said theie were only funds for two months. If the Trustees could hang out .till December they would be all light. It "would be better to co-operate witn Timaru. Resolved to authoiise chairman to give his opinion on an enabling Bill to be diafted .by Messrs Peny, Perry and Ennerney. Mr Walker said that if they consideied an '-enabling Bill necessary they would not be en--dorsing the opinion of Messis Hamilton and Bell. From leasee ISJephant Hill reserve saying that he had finisffed grubbing the gorse, and £2 on account of rent. — "Tenant - given till next month to pay arrears. From Mr W.,H. Beckett and 15 other ratepayers complaining of the unsuitable condi- • tion of bridge near Kelcy's bush. — Overseei to .•report next meeting. From E. El worthy, saying that at a meeting held at his house on the 18th a resolution ■was passed that a road in Block XI, in the •Otaio district, be closed. The rate of -11-16ths of a penny In the £ for the county and |d ior the Harbour Board ' -was confirmed. From Lands and Survey department asking why no action had been taken re gates on 3lr Ehvorthy 's lane 1 .
Mr Ehvoithy said that four gates were off and the fifth would be off in a few days. Eveiything had been done that could be done. After some discussion it was resolved that the Clerk give the Minister full paiiiiculars and inform him that no hardship was inflicted on anyone. Mr P. J. Muiphy repoited that at a meeting of ratepayer held at Grlenavy, Messis J. Fleming, Kennedy, W. Scott, S. Smart and D. Maitin weie elected a Waihao Warer-race committee. Fiom 21 ratepayers asking that all land adjacent to the village settlement, Pareora, bo exempted from water-raca maintenance. — Held over. Overseer's report showed that metal was needed near J. Hanley's, Main Waitaki road. — Piesent conti actor to do the woik. A flaxmill was being erected at Pont d'Bstre, and the traffic would necessitate the repair of the bridge. — Overseer to attend to matter. — The ford asked for by Mr Cameron was completed. Mr Kennard had been allowed by Mr Hayes manager to use road for hig stock. A draught horse was needed and in reference to the purchase of another Mr Walker said more work should be done by contract which would "be much cheaper. The bulk of the Council's money was expended on day work. He believed a job more than £10 should be contracted for. A number of culverts were being put in by day labour that should have been tendered for. It was decided that Messrs Studholme, Douglas and the Overseer seleot a horse, Mr Walker alone opposing.
Overseer asked permisson to hire * thiee horse team for a few months to do work on the Claikesfield load. — After much discussion it was resolved that a sum not exceeding £100 be expended on the road. The Diamage Board's diain at Makikihi had greatly improved the countiy. Tenders^ weie opened for forming and metalling (Waihaoaunga) as follows: — E. White, £117 12s 6d (accepted) ; B. Biyson, .£122 0s 9d ; J. Hardy, £126 9s Gd. Mr Murphy tendeied his resignation as he was leaving the distuct. He thanked the Council for the couiteous treatment he had received duiing the 14 years he had been a .member. — Designation accepted with regiet. Accounts amounting to £1037 Is 5d weia passed and the meeting ended.
