CORRESPONDENCE.

(TO THB EDIXOIt.) Sir, — Through the medium of your widelycircui&ting journal, I wish to explain to th« members of the Temperance Reform Union why their President and becietary did not, as an singed, present an address to the Rev. H, Kelly, at the gatheiing in Knox Church on Thuisday evening. Mr T. Blown waited on Mr M. Smith, ot the Programme Committee on Tuesday evening and the following jetter was handed to me at 5. 15 p.m. on Thursday. — " Waimate July 7, '93. Mr -Q-. Dash. Dear Sir, — Mr T. Brown asked me to let you know whether the Temperance Society would be permitted to piesentan a idress to the Rev. H. Keily at Knox Church gathering this evening, and 1 have to inform you that the gub-com-mittee appointed to arrange the programme regret that they have no power to give the peimission asked for. — Youis, etc., M. Smith." The Knox Cnurch Christian Endeavour Society is strong on temperance, the Drum and Fife Band is composed of pledged abstainers, the church has a flourishing Band of Hope, and the Rev, H, Kelly is known fat and wide as a fighting prohibitionist ; lead in the light these facts, the foregoing letter is obvidusly;in need of some explanation. Though the Temperance Party will regiet the paltriness which prevented pub ie recognition of Mr Kelly'g woik as a temperance reformer, he will by thit party be " ever remembered* by what he has flone." — I am, etc., < , _ GEO. DASH, .. , Hon. Sco. Temperanofc iUform Unijjrit
