Football. — The Waimate-Golonial match took place on Thursday in Victoria Park, in the presence of several hundred spectators* At 3.15 Waimate kicked off, and Boon the visitors were placed on the defensive. From a free kick B, Presland drew "first blood" for Waimate by kicking a magnificent goal amidst tumultuous cheering. This was the only ■core registered during the first spell. On changing over, play became fast and furious, both sides putting forth all their strength. But the Waimate forwards proved too q )od for their opponents, and in a dribbling r ish Butcher scored near the corner ffa». The kick at goal was fruitless. The Colonials ~ were now p'ac3 l on their mettle and a long kick sent the ball over the Waimate line. Gavr fdllowing up, scored. This try was dispute!, Waimate claiming a "force down." Fox kicked an easy goal. Near the call of time Collins, who played spendidly all through, scored, after a dodgy run, for Wairmte, but no goal was kicked. Waimate thus won by 9 points to 5, after a well contested game. For the Colonift's Gair, Eapsey, Shirtcliffe, Boys, Newton, Mara and Boys (2) played well, , while the" Waimate forwards, B. Presland, T, and S. Williams, Finn, Cunningham and Rattray in particular, played the best game even seen- in Victoria Park.' Collins and Hayes were the best of the basks... t Mr Mcßabie 'gave - every satisfaction as referee. The next match takes place in Timaru next Thursbay againit Geraldine, and Waihi come here on that day week to play their return.

School showed their appreciation of ther Ray» Father Regnault by on Tuesday evening making him a presentation of a pretty Alock and " gong, at an entertaiement held in the school* room, the date being the eve of the Revd. , gentleman's natal day. A nice little programme was gone through by the pupils, past and present. Miss Sims made the presenta* ' tion, which was suitably acknowledged. The guests and children were invited to partake of supper and with a few more songs and hand* shaking, Father Regnault was wished a hun-dred-fold many happy returns of his feast day. Entertainment. — St. Agustine's school* room was well filled on Thursday evening, the occasion being a concert in aid of St. Augustine's funds. The first part of the programme was devoted to music, both vocal and 1 instwi* ) mental. The following ladies and gentlemen i took part :— Mesiames Hamilton, Owen, Scott and' Jones and Misse3 Price and Mulcock and Messrs Goldstone and Akhurst. Mr Pitcaiihly , gave a humorous reading which was very well received. The second part consisted of a Comedietta, "Aslikeasjiwo peaa.'Mn which Misses Evans (2), and Mj*srs Hamilton, Lse , and Pitcaithly took part with their usual " ability.
