DUNEDIN.

The " Daily Times" of the 21st instant reports :—: —

In general business at this season of the year is characterised by a degree of briskness, aud the movements in the market possess s>onie amount of interest. The -present time has not been quite an exception to the rule, though the uncertain weather prevailing has interfered much with the trade doing for upcountry requirements, and rather damped the activity beginning to be felt in other respects; still, a steady demand has been exrenenoed in most branches of oommerce, and without

the occurrence of any special important operations, the month's transactions will be equal to the average. Markets have not been altogether without change, several leading items close with more or less of improvement. Breadstuffs are prominent, as sustaining a material advance, while, with some slight exceptions, imports remain at firm values. Since the 20th ult., there have been four arrivals from tho United Kingdom, viz. : the ships Timaru and Chile, from London ; Jesse Brown from Leith ; and Robert Henderson from Glasgow ; by these the accessions to stocks have been comparatively light, and no arrivals from foreign ports have taken place, though full shipments of timber, teas, and other goods are ufloat, and several cargoes should have been to hand. The shipment of the wool clip is proceeding with spirit, but except for inlerprovincial requirements, no other export of produce is taking place ; and it is sufficiently apparent, that there will he no surplus of grain to spare for despatch beyond the colony. Credit is well sustained, and the state of the monej market satisfactory. Bank rates of discount are unchanged, and exchanges close, viz : — On London, at 3 days' sight, 2 per cent, premium ; at 30 days', 1\ per cent. ; at 60 days', 1 per cent. On Melbourne, J- per cenc. On Sydney and the other Australian Colonies, 1 per cent, premium.
