High holiday -was kept yesterday by the crew of the coast's faithful servant — the steamer Bruce. The occasion was honestly observed aud improved. To-day work will be resumed, as we see by advertisement that she leaves for the Buller ou this morning's tide. The s.s. Airedale sailed direct for Sydney yesterday morning. Sho' had quite seventy passengers and a good freight of gold-dust shipped here, besides a few thousand ounces at Greymouth. Shipping business was all but entirely suspended ypsterday, there being no inwardbounders to tow in from the -roadstead, and the departure of the one or two bound out was purposely postponed, in honor of the grand annual festival of tho Christian race. | Tho day passed off very quietly, and was 1 decorously kept on and about Gibson's Quay, not a single case of inebriety — either by hearsay or visually — having been brought under our notice. The various vessels were gaily decked out with bunting from truck lo rail, and, viewed under the influence of clear skies and sunshine, the scene partook rather of Sabbatical serenity than the boisterous hilarity with which Father Christmas is usually greeted in "seaport towns. Only the steamers Challenge and Favorite made a move on yesterday's tide — the former ran in from tho roadstead, whero she had spent the previous twenty-four hours in fishing and doing the Micawber business ; whilst the Favorite came in with the Airedale's cargo, and then ran out -again with her passengers, mails, and gold. The Favorib.3 savec l tide on her return.
