West Coast Times Office, Saturday Evening. The amount of import duty collected at the Custom House to-day was L 614 18a 7d. Tho following list of merchandise cleared shows its distribution : —
Business in tho import market during the week has shown a decided improvement ; and for staples generally, enhanced values have been realised. Shipments to hand have not been heavy, and the increasing demand fully warrant improved quotations. Flour (Adelaide), is now placed at L2O, stock low ; oats have improved at 3s per bushel ; bran and chaff are firmer, without materiul alterations on last quotations ; potatoes, vcy scare and realiso LlB to L2O per ton. In provisions thero is no material alteration ; first-class hams and bacon are enquired for, late prices are fully maintained ;t; t butter has further declined ; first-class can now be obtained at Is per Ib, this is not to be attributed to heavy stocks, but to the season, and prices ruling at inter-provincial markets ; prune Colonial cheese would come to a good market. In wines and spirits the mai-kot continues firm, fli-sl-elass imported beer, in glass, is taken into stock at full rates.
