TASMANIA.
We have Hobart Town papers to J'ae 13th instant, upon which date the " Mercwy," reports as follows t — "Business is rather depressed at present* and there is a downward tendency in the breadslu(F3 niarkpt, owing no doubt to the limited amount of local trade, bakers generally buying only from ha.id to mouth. A sale of about six huidred bushels of wheat was made to-day at 4s 6J per bushel for export, the lot. being the balance of a parcel, the bulk of which was sold some time ago. The quotation given us is from 4s 4d to 4s 6d per bushel, according to quality. Flour i.s sdll quoted nominally at from LlO to LlO 103 per ton, aiul bran at Is per bushel. Sharp's LG per ton. Oats are not in great demand, nnd the quolaliou given is from 2s 2d to 23 3d per bushel. Peas were sold to-tlay at 3s 6d per bushel. Old potatoes are, wo believe, inquired for, but we have heard of :io | important sales. A parcel of fino new butter i was sold to-day at 10A per lb. A consider- , able quantity of old is still in tho market, but ' there is very little sale for it. Bacon was i sold to-day, in trade parcels, at Gd per lb, j and a little lot of superior quality brought '31 ; these prices • pretty fairly represent the market range for this produce. Hams are quoted at from 7d to 9d per lb. There have . been few sales of bark lately, and we have • heard of no extensive orders as yet ; old ; bark chopped would realise readily L 4 per ! ton, including bags." j NEW SOUTH WALES. j Our dates from Sydney wd to the 18 »h jnst. The "Herald" has the following remarks on the state of the import market: — "A few small transactions in teas and liquors have taken place at late rates, but none of sufficient importance 1o call for special mention. At auction, tho cargo of New Zealand timber, ex Sea Gull, was sold by Messrs Fothcringham and Mnllon, and realised fair market rates. The shipment of Tahitian sugar, ex Harmon, is to be offered at Messrs Stubbs and Co's rooms to-morrow. The samples are very fine, aid the sale will l»e watched with some interest by traders. Should the prices prove remunerative to growers, it is probable that a source of supply so contiguous to our market will, to some extent, reader us independent of Mauritius."
