THE WAIMEA.
(fhom ottb ows correspondent.) November 14. Mining operations have been successfully carried on lately through tho improvement in the state of the weather. At Eed Jack's Greeks', and Fox's, the left-hand, middle, and right-hand branches of the Waimea Creek, and at Italians, Callaghan's, Maori, and German Gullies, a good deal of the precious metal has been obtained, miners not having been frequently interrupted in their labors by a fall of rain, as they were for some time previously, A small rush to ground about a mile and a half up the Aralmra Eivcr set in on Monday last, caused by a party finding payable dirt on a terrace in the locality! A good many claims are marked out, but nothing fresh has as yet been struck. From Lanip'ough and Fin's Rush there is nothing new to report, while at Quinn's Diggings, Kelly's Terrace, the discovery of payable ground beyond tho limit arrived at a fortnight ago, is not yet made. A large number of shafts are still being sunk. Slow progress only can be made, as the ground is exceedingly wefc, so that none but large parties working on eight hour shifts, have any chance of bottoming. The middle branch of the Waimea creek, usually a very quiet place, is now attracting attention, and several parties have been induced to set to work here by news being circulated that the tuunel claims, about half-a-mile up the branch in the terrace, on the southern side of it, were yielding satisfaetoi-ily. A small population have been steadily working in tlris.part for years, and as several claims are lately registered, doubtless the ground pays the holders well. The tempestuous weather of the week tore many a huge tree from its roots, and in one or two instances did serious damage to property. At Piper's flat a large tree was blown down, and falling on a hut near .Tones' store completely crushed it, destroying <also a stable on the opposite side of the road. Fortunately, a horse in the stable escaped uninjured, although the branches of the tree quite encircled him. In many places tracks are blocked up bj r timber so brought down, but uo injury to life or limb lias been reported. Warden's Coukt. goldsbohough. (Before M. Keogh, Esq., Warden). A Child's Sense of Retribution. — At an infant Sabbath School, the teacher gave a Bible story — the Prodigal Son, When ho came to the place where the poor ragged son reached his former "home, and his father saw him " a great way off," he inquired what the father probably did. One of the smallest boys, with his fist clenched, said, " I dunno, but I guess he set the dog on him. Ugly Men. — In the eastern part of Ohio there resides a man named Brown, now a justice of the peace, and a very sensible man, but by common consent, tho ugliest individual in the West, being long, gaunt, sallow and awry, with a gait like a kangaroo. One day hunting, and on one of tho mountain roads ho met a man on foot and alone, who was longer, gaunter, by all odd*, than himself. He could 'givo the squire fifty and beat him. Without saying a word, Brown raised his gun and deliberately leveled it at the stranger. "For God's sake, don't shoot," shouted the man in alarm. "Stranger," replied Brown, " I swore ten years ago, that if I ever met a man uglier than I was, I'd shoot him, and you are tho first one I've seen." The stranger, after taking a careful survey of his rival replied — " Well, captain, if I look any worse than' you do, shoot!"
