THE LANDING AT GLENELG
At Glenelg, the demonstration was not on so grand a scale as was expected, for the intimation that the traffic on the Bay Eoad would be stopped, led people naturally to the conclusion that, if they saw the Glenelg ceremony, they would miss the spectacle at the entrance to the metropolis on South Terrace. There was, however, a goodly gathering of loyal subjects to greet the son of their Queen. The display of decorations was a credit to our favorite watering-place. At the shore end of the pier was a dome-shaped arch, with a crown surmounting it. This was tastefully constructed with pine foliage and other evergreens. Passing through this tho EoyaL procession came to a smaller arch of pine branches, with a profusion of our beautiful scrub flowers interwoven with the green foliage. A I few steps from this was the dais, with a canopy. On the south of the pier was a battery of four guns, which took up position before the Luke arrived on the north side upon the beach. About a quarter past one o'clock Volunteer Companies Nos. 1, 2. and 3, the last being the Scotch Company, arrived with the band playing. The cavalry, numbering 150 in all, shortly after arrived. At half-past one o'clock the Prince left his vessel, and as the barge put off the Galatea fired a Eoyal salute. Soon the Eoyal barge was seen, her Majesty's jolly tars pulling a long, stead}' stroke, and the steamers Eleanor aud. Goolwa, with a number of boats from the man-of-war, in the wake While this marine spectacle was in proi gross his Excellency arrived, and came up the jetty leaning on the arms of the Chief Secretary and Commander Hutchison, and attended by the Commander of the Forces (Colonel Haniloy), the Executive, the Private Secretary, Major Lucas, Captain Deering. MrB.D. Eoss, D.A.C.G., hon. secretary of the Eecption Committee. Within a minute of two o'clock the Eoyal barge swept up to the stairs of the jetty, and his Boyal Highness stepped out. On the jetty he was received by his Excellency, and the spectators cheered, and the battery fired a Eoyal salute. His Eoyal Highness and His Excellency, who were both dressed in plaiu clothes, passed down the pier till they arrived at the dais, where they were met by the Mayor of Glenelg (Mr E. W. Andrews), who read an address ; to which His Eoyal Highness read the following reply :— " Gentlemen, — Accept my best thanks for this hearty welcome to Australia. It ' affords me the greatest pleasure to visit this most important colony, where the cordiality of the reception I have just mot with, and the spirit of loyalty displayed towards tho Queen's throne and person, will cause mo ever to remember Glenelg as my first landing place in Australia. " Alfred. " The Mayor and Corporation of Glenelg, South Australia." His Eoyal Highness then proceeded to the vice-regal carriage, accompanied by his Excellency, Lord Newry, and the hon. Mr Yorke. The carriage was drawn -by four bright bays. At starting the near side leader became restive, plunged, and rolled over, throwing his postillion. His Eoyal Highness appeared in a quiet way to regard the performance with some interest, but no harm was done, and the horse and postillion were righted, and a start took place amidst vociferous cheering. At various points in the town, the cavalry and carriages fell in, and once on the straight road the procession formed.
