Egmont cauie to an anchor oiF the bar yesterday morning. She is fro*n Sydney, aud ■nili be tendered this morning by the p.s. Favorite, and immediately afterward - proceed on J'or way to Nelson and Northern Ports. We may remark that the steamer Otago was expected sometime during la-fc ■•".'giit. Should she hive arrived, she also will bo despatehe 1 on this morning's ride, for j Melbourne, via Ntlson, Wellington, Lytcelton, and Dunedii.. Ijo bnr was declared workable ou yesterday morning s tide , both frcslu?*; and surf having very much abated, and tlie Yarra accordingly got up Etc..m with tho intention of tendering' the Aihambia when tho tide served. But shortly after sin. rise tho weather ca,me in thick and squally from the westward, and soiled (1- to n iiery galo raising a greas deal of soa 1 ' ould have sadly interfered with .he trauahipment of passengers, and attached extra danger to an operation risky cn f ni£ r h afc all times. Thus considering, Captain Nicoli wisely determined to wait another day, trusting thiit then tho weather would prove a little more favorable. As there was every appearance last nighfc that ifc would, we believe the long-delayed Alhambra's passengers will be landed this morning, and the good ship despatched on her way to Melbourne viu Cook's Straits, Dnnedin, and Bluff Harbor. The port of GTreymouth has fallen into a sad state through the late floods, which have, ifc appears, entirely destroyed the approaches to tho river, as it now finds its way to the aoa through five outlets, neither of them navigable at high .vater. The above is the substance of a telegram received by Mr Greer, yesterday, fiv >n Captain Kerley, of the Bruce. The little sf earner is a prisoner in the river, there not bung enough on tho bar to float a vessel of even her light draught. J As we feared she would, so has the Gratitude become a stumbling block and source of danger to the port, the unfortunate old craffc having toppled over, and now lie 3 with her heel on the Spit, and her fore pai-l snbaierged in the channel. The river beings thus obstructed is cutting away the North Spit at a fearful rate, and uidess steps are afc once taken to remove the wreck, we fear that'iu a tide or twe a second channel will bo formed through the Spit, and the port reduced to that state of uunavigablencss from which ifc has but lately recovered. Tlie Secretary for the Goldfields, accompanied by tlie Harbormaster, tho District Engineer and Dislrirt Surveyor, visited the Spit yesterday, and wo understand that it is contemplated to blow the old hulk to pieces with gunpowder. Wo beliovo this is the ouly remedy likoly to prove effective, aud we hopo no limo will be lost in applying it. Wo vrunld also recommend tho immediate removal of the brig Valiant from her present position, as she creates an eddy that is making sad inroads upon the North Spit, immediately opposite the protective works that only lately wese constructed at a great expense by tho Government. Very large powers arc invested in Captain Turnbull by the new harbor regulations, and we sincerely hopo he will not hesitate to make use of them, for tlie good, -if not the absoluto salvation of the port.
