THE TOTARA.
(FROM THE RO3S GUARDIAN, NOT. 9.) MINING KEPOBT. The continued wet weather has prevented any material change in the deep claims; the steam companies are steadily pumping, and it is thought the men will be able to get below them on Monday. Nothing will be done in the lower bottoms of the swamped whim claims until the drfiin is completed, which is expected in about a month. Tbe Band of Hope Company have called for tenders from miners willing to work a part of their ground on tribute, this plan is very commonly adopted in Australia, and will some day probably find favor here. Notwithstanding the temporary depression here, the digging population is increasing by the return of many who had left us and failed to find better ground elsewhere, these and many others will, no doubt, find payable ground when fine weather sets in. The Totara continues to attract a few stragglers, but nothing of importance is reported, though a general belief exists that new ground will be opened this summer in the upper tributaries. In the course of a few days a pack track, the -work of private enterprise, will be open to Banfill's creek, the furtherest feeder of the Totara yet worked, and as prospectors advance, the traders seem prepared to follow them up with supplies. Doiioghue's continues to be the chief point of attraction in this district, several shares have been sold during the week at good prices. Among which may be mentioned a fifth share in the prospectors' claim, at L 235, and an eighth in Sweeny's race and claims for L 250. In each these cases, we believe, the buyers have made good purchases. The water race for supplying additional power to the pumping — which is far advanced — and with the new pumps will be ready in a few days. At the extraordinary meeting of the shareholders in the Band of Hope Gold Mining Company on the 4th instant the following directors were appointed : Messrs Gordon, Gibson, M'Auliffe, J. Moye, F. Moran, J. M'Gaffin, and T. Lee. Mr S. James was appointed manager, and we believe will in a few (lays commence operations in the claim ij .Jjf» lafe Prince of'VyaJei Company,
