Mr Anderson's benefit waa j crowded. Crowther's mills, at Woollombi, were burned down yesterday. A considerable quantity of breadstuff's was destroyed. The steamer Diamantina has been despatched to the scene of the Telegraph's wreck, to endeavor to save cargo. Monday, Oct. 14. The Catholic clergy have commenced a series of meetings in aid of the movement for educating the Catholic youth without connexion with the state. The Claud Hamilton brought 22,0000z. of gold. The captain of the Eliza Blanche reports having seen a schooner, name unknown, founder off the Dromedary on Thursday. The Diamantina has returned from the wreck of the Telegraph. She was unable to save any of the cargo, as the vessel had broken up. The schooner Manukau, coal laden, has been lost near Wellington. A 30oz. nugget has been found at the new diggings on Clyde Hiver. The Bruekley Castle has cleared for London with 2,045 bales of wool, 458 casks of tallow, and 6469 hides. Tuesday, Oct. 15. In the Assembly, a motion in favor of the payment of members was met by the previous question. The Cricket Association last night decided not to entertain the proposed intercolonial athletic contest. Wednesday, Oct. 16. The Rev. S. C. Kent has been elected president of the Congregational Union. The mail steamship Bombay arrived at noon, after a passage of forty-seven hours from wharf to vi harf. ' . Mr M'Evilly, the Parliamentary librarian, died to-day of injuries received at thepicmc on Saturday. The Sydney Insurance Company has declared a dividend of ten per cent. Thursday, Oct. 17. The debate on the Land Bill is still going on The Government are making great efforts to avert a defeat. The Opposition are confident of having a majority. The wool sales are rather dull. A parcel of prime greasy brought 9|d. Skins are dull, and lower. Wool freights to London are now Id per lb. At the Police Court to-day John E. Mann'ng, merchant, was committed for trial for perjury. The Earl of Belmore has engaged a passage by the ship Sobraon, which would leave London about the end of September. Mr Moore, the curator of the Botanical gardens, had an interview with the Queen at Osborne, She inquired minutely respecting colonial affairs.and seemed deeply interested therein. The schooner seen foundering off the Dromedary was the Picard, of Hobart Town. The crew have arrived here. Friday, Oct. 18. The mail has brought the Privy Council's judgment in Bertrand's case. The Executive Council's decision thereon is unknown. Exchange on London is at one-half per cent, premium. Discount, six per cent, for sixty days', and seven per cent, for ninety days'. The division on the Land Bill took place at half-past one o'clock this morning. The Government were defeated by thirtvtwo to thirty. In the Assembly this afternoon, Mr Martin obtained an adjournment till Wednesday, to enable the Government to decide on their course, on their defeat on the Land Bill. They intend, it is said, to ask for a dissolution. A company have purchased the wreck of the Telegraph, steamer, for L 25. Smith's Insurance Company's dividend is ten per cent. New diggings havo been discovered near the Pigeon-house. A twenty-eight ounce nugget was found. The Harmonic Society have produced "Judas Maccabams " successfully. Saturday, Oct. 19. It is rumored that the Government intend to .ask their supporters to move a vote of confidence, to enable them to retain office. The past quarter's revenue is Li 35,623, being a decrease of L 15.737. The expenditure was L 788,217. The Yacht Club's opening excursion for the season took place to-day. Lrv£BPOOL, N.S.W., Monday. All the machinery of the new paper mill was privately started to-day. It worked admirably. The works will bo officially opened on the 28th inst.
