MELBOURNE.
The " Australasian," of tho 12th inst., reports as follows : — Business in the import markets has been moderately active, though nothing of a speculative nature has transpired. In tho market for brcadstud's there is little to report, chiefly owing to tho difficulty/ of mooting with suitable parcels of flour or wheat. Of Victorian flour, trade sales nro effected at Ll3 ; of wheat, tho market has been ontiVely denied,
and any parcels coming to hand would bo readily purchased at extrenio rates. A largo inquiry for oats has been experienced, though; owing to the stiffness of holders, no sales have been made public. Californian realise better prices, 2s 5d to 2s 6d having been obtained, and 2s 7d to 2s 9d is wanting for colonial. Sugars are firmer. Advices to hand from Mauritius are favouvablo, the ships loading being one for Dunedin and one for Sydney, an unusually small number for this period of the year. Halt continues to attract nptice. A considerable demand has sprung np for Ormond Swiss cigars. Sales have been made to-day at 40s, but as stocks have now become so very much reduced holders have advanced the price to 453. A line of 130 cases of axe and pick handles lias been placed at a very full figure, equivalent to 13s for JSTo. 1. Coarse salt continues to be disposed of at L 5; fine realises L 5 IO3; about ninety tons of fine have also been disposed of for export. The Jan van Schffelaar, which arrived to-day from Rotterdam, brings about 10,000 easas of geneva, being the first shipment prepared so far in accordance with the new duties ; but having been roady when the alteration was first contemplated, and when the contents were not intended to be interterfcred with, the strength is only up to the required standard, viz., proof, the contents being 2 28-32.
