ALTEEATIONS IN THE TAEIFF. The " Customs Tariff Act Amendment Act, 1867 " contains certain alterations in and and abolishment of the duty upon sundry articles, which we have enumerated below :—: — Alteration in Duty.— Coffee roasted, 5d per lb. ; coffee raw, 3d per lb. Abolishment of Duty. — Blasting powder resin, and olive and palm oil, in bulk, to be free goods.
The late Albert Smith, of pleasant memory, once wrote in au hotel visitor's book his initials "A. S." A waggish friend instantly wrote under them, " Two-thirds of the truth." The show-window of a certain corset maker exhibits a singular instance of illiterate diction. On a card appears the following sentence : " All kinds of ladies stays here."
