Wo observe that the Panama company are issuing return tickets at reduced rates between this port to Melbourne on the occasion of Duke Edinburgh's visit to the Victorian metropolis. The s.s. Rangitoto, which leaves on Monday next, will take away the first batch of possengers. Others of the company's steamers will follow her in due course. The good steamer Omco arrived at the Bluff from Melbourne on Monday last, and at Dunedin on Wednesday morning. She will follow the coast round, calling at Wellington and intermediate ports, and may be looked for here on Monday next. The Omeo proceeds direct to Melbourne. Parties desirous of visiting Melbourne during the visit .of the Duke of Edinburgh can obtain return tickets at reduced i-ales by the Omeo by the Alhambra, and the Gothenburg, which will follow her. The steamer Bruce was yesterday examined by Mr Nancarrow, who expressed himself highly satisGed with the thorough state of efficiency of Jier boiler and machinery, and renewed her certificate for the ensuing six months. The insiJeetion over, a party of old salts adjourned to the cabin, where Mr Greer presided with his usual hospitality, aud libations of champagne were poured out in honor of the smart and fortunate little steamer. A large quantity of live stock was yesterday landed by tho Tasmanian Maid from the barques Harriet Nathan and Glencoe, and the brigantine Leonidas. The last named vessel sent 119 sheep ashore in prime condition ; the Nathan contributed twenty-two pigs and twenty pair of fowls ; and the Glencoe fiftysix pig 3 and several coops of poultry. We have to thank Captain Philips of the Glencoe for a file of Hobart Town papers -to date 10th inst. The Bruce was ready for sea last night, but the postponement of her departure until this morning was considerately decided upon by Mr Grecr, to avoid interfering with the movements of tho Tasmaniau Maid, whoso warps must have been slacked up to have allowed the Bruce an exit. The condition of the bar yesterday was not favorable for lowing, for, although the TasruanianMaid found nearly twejve feet of water coming in, the channel run parallel with, and so close to, the North Beach, and was, moreover, swept by a sharp ugly surf, that to have used it for towing would have been sheer * recklessness on the part of the tug-masters. A marked improvemeut is, however, perceptablo in the port's entrance, the long-wished for South Spit having at last formed, and providing it withstands the attack of the present flood, we believe that in a few days there will be a good navigable channel, through which vessels of ten feet draught may pass safely. The river was not so much flooded yesterday morning as wo expected it would have been by tho rainfall on Wednesday night; swollen, however, it was, and ran with extra velocity between tho spits and through tho two channels intersecting the bar, and to this may be attributed the disaster of the steamer Tasmanian Maid, -which, we are sorry to say, went ashore upon the South Spit, where we left her at a late hour last night. The Maid wa3 returning from northern ports, and, as we stated in our last issue, left Greymouth on Wednesday evening for Hokitika, under orders to land live-stock from several vessels of the roadstead fleet. She arrived off the bar between eight and nine o'clock, and next morn-r-ing transhipped sheep,- pigs, poultry, and fruit from the Leonidas, Glcncop, and Harriet Nathan, and with a heavy deckload, including four bullocks brought from

Westport she steamed for tho river, choosing the north channel to enter by. Sho passed through it cleverly, but to make so sharp a turn as that round the North Spit against so strong a current was beyond her powers, and she accordingly shot across the 6trcam and took the ground a little below the old Frederic. No time was lost in landing the passengers and cargo, and preparations were also made to heave her off upon last night's tide, a strong warp being run out to one of the old boilers, and another to a powerful winch fixed, for the occasion, on tho Gratitude's dock. Plenty of labor was engaged, and, as the tide made, heaving her off commenced, and was proceeded with until first quarter ebb, but without producing the desired result, although sho moved, we believe, between twenty and thirty feet in tho right direction. The attempt will be renewed this morning, and wo hope with better success. At the same time, it is more than probable that she will be washed out to sea by tho heavy flood, wliich must result from the tremendous rain of last night. Indeed the river was bank and bank when wo went to pres3, but the intense darkness prevented us ascertaining the Maid's position. We hope all will go well with her.
