THE WAIMEA.
(feom otje own coebespondent.) October 23. The showery weather of the past week has been beneficial to the interests of a great portion of tho population of the district, keeping all the sluicers constantly employed. An unusually large quantity of gold has been disposed of, lately, and the escort of last week had more of the metallic treasure to convey to Hokitika than had been entrusted to their care for five or six months previously. The rush to Lamplough has not been successful beyond the bottom of the two holes on gold mentioned last week. A good many parties are, however, steadily at work sinking. At Piper's diggings there is abundance of animation. As a proof of tho worth of some of the claims at Quinn's Terrace, may be mentioned the fact of one party selling L3OB worth of gold this week, Ll5O worth last week, and a parcel fetching over L2OO on the week before last. Another hole to the westward, at a depth of 130 feet, has been bottomed on payable washdirt, and sinking nearer to the Arahura is continuing, with great hopes of success. The main track from the beach to Lainplough is rendered impassable to drays and difficult for horses to traverse, by a large slip of earth from the side of a terrace, up which the track winds, falling on the road on Saturday last. A passer-by at the time narrowly escaped severe injury. He fortunately jumped aside just as the bank gave way, and thus got out of danger. No time should be lost by the Government in clearing the track and securing the side of tho terrace as effectually as possible, so that traffic may be resumed. A large anvil, belonging to F. Birch, a blacksmith at Stafford Town, wai cither stolen a few days ago, or taken away by some one wishing to play a practical joko. At all events, the loser has suffered much
inconvenience and loss in consequence, and will be glad enough to see his property in its usual place once more. If a joke has been practised the player should be rewarded for his cleverness.
