TO THE RATEPAYERS OF HOKITIKA. f^i ENTLEMEN,— I beg to return you my very sincere and cordial thanks for the honor you have conferred upon me in electing me to the Mayoralty. Both my friend Mr Prosser and myself solicited your suffrages, on the ground of our having some claims on the score of past services rendered to the town as - members of tho Municipal Council. You have recognised those claims by the large number of votes polled for each of usj; whilst in the position assigned io Mr Button on the poll, you have paid him a compliment, which I am sure, under tho circumstances, both himself and his supporters will appi-eciate. I trust, Gentlemen, that I shall be able to justify the confidence you have reposed in me, by a constant attention to your interests, and that both those who have supported me, and those who have voted against me, will -find me in all respects a faithful public servant. I cannot omit to express my special thanks to the members of nvv committee who worked so -zealously to secure my return. Trusting that from this moment all the differences that have arisen out of tho election will terminate, I am, Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, WILLIAM SHAW. Hokifcika, October 21, 1867.
