As the increase in the items of spirits alone, however, was L 123,561, and as the total increase was only 111,908, it follows that there would have been a falling off but for the change of the present duties, and Ihe forestalment of the revenue of some future quarters under that head. There were increases in wine, tobacco, cigars, tea (L 4457), sugar, coffee, opium, and rice ; and decreases of no great amount in beer, hops, and malt. Wharfage rates fell off by L 4734. and the gold export duty by LIO,BBO. Sales of land by auction show a remarkable decrease, from L 75,714 to L 33.311. The revenue for the year was L 3,040,761, showing an increase ofL9l,2sßoverthatof 1886, or L 43,349 less than the increased revenue derived from spirits alone. The decreases amounted to L 287.029, and arose on thirty-five items of account, while the increases were on thirteen items only.
